This paper presents aerial manipulation using a quadrotor with a two-DOF robot arm. By considering a quadrotor and robot arm as a combined system, the kinematic and dynamic models are developed, and an adaptive sliding mode controller is designed. With the controller, an autonomous flight experiment is conducted including picking up and delivering an object, which requires accurate control of a quadrotor and robot arm. Overall result shows that the proposed approach demonstrates satisfactory performance as a potential platform which can be utilized in various applications such as inspection, manipulation, or transportation in remote places.

In the past few decades, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become promising mobile platforms capable of navigating semiautonomously or autonomously in uncertain environments. The level of autonomy and the flexible technology of these flying robots have rapidly evolved, making it possible to coordinate teams of UAVs in a wide spectrum of tasks. These applications include search and rescue missions; disaster relief operations, such as forest fires [1]; and environmental monitoring and surveillance. In some of these tasks, UAVs work in coordination with other robots, as in robot-assisted inspection at sea [2]. Recently, radio-controlled UAVs carrying radiation sensors and video cameras were used to monitor, diagnose, and evaluate the situation at Japans Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant facility [3].

Agile Load Transportation : Safe and Efficient Load Manipulation with Aerial Robots

In this paper we describe a system for aerial manipulation composed of a helicopter platform and a fully actuated seven Degree of Freedom (DoF) redundant industrial robotic arm. We present the first analysis of such kind of systems and show that the dynamic coupling between helicopter and arm can generate diverging oscillations with very slow frequency which we called phase circles. Based on the presented analysis, we propose a control approach for the whole system. The partial decoupling between helicopter and arm - which eliminates the phase circles - is achieved by means of special movement of robotic arm utilizing its redundant DoF. For the underlying arm control a specially designed impedance controller was proposed. In different flight experiments we showcase that the proposed kind of system type might be used in the future for practically relevant tasks. In an integrated experiment we demonstrate a basic manipulation task - impedance based grasping of an object from the environment underlaying a visual object tracking control loop.

First analysis and experiments in aerial manipulation using fully actuated redundant robot arm

This article focuses on the design, modeling, and control of an aerial manipulator prototype, i.e., an innovative configuration consisting of a miniature quadrotor helicopter endowed with a robotic manipulator. The overall system is designed to accomplish operations that require physical interaction with the surrounding environment while remaining airborne. To investigate the dynamical model of the aerial manipulator, a simple planar benchmark is used to analyze the interactions between the quadrotor, the robotic manipulator, and the environment. A control strategy for the planar system is designed to guarantee robustness in the presence or absence of contacts. Experiments on a real setup validate the control in the two different scenarios in which the aerial manipulator is either freely flying or physically interacting with the environment.

Developing an Aerial Manipulator Prototype: Physical Interaction with the Environment

This paper focuses on the modeling and control of a flying robot. The complete system, composed of a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle and a custom-made manipulator, has been designed for remote inspection by contact of industrial plants. The goal of this paper is to show the dynamical characteristics of the flying robot during tasks that require physical interaction, and to determine a control strategy that allows to safely interact with unknown environments. The methodology has been implemented on a real prototype and tested in an indoor area. Experimental results validate the proposed controller and show its effectiveness.

Modeling and control of a flying robot for contact inspection

This contribution presents the first results of the development of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) which is capable of applying force to a wall while maintaining flight stability. This is a novel idea since UAVs are used so far only for tasks without physical contact to the surrounding objects. The basis for the work presented is a quadrotor system which is stabilized with an inertial measurement unit. As a new approach an additional actuator was added to generate forces in physical contact while the UAV stays horizontal. A control architecture based on ultrasonic distance sensors and a CMOS-camera is proposed. The performance of the system was proved by several flight tests. Potential applications of the system can be physical tasks at high places like cleaning windows or walls as well as rescue or maintenance tasks.

Semi-autonomous flying robot for physical interaction with environment

For humans and robots to collaborate effectively as teammates in unstructured environments, robots must be able to construct semantically rich models of the environment, communicate efficiently with teammates, and perform sequences of tasks robustly with minimal human intervention, as direct human guidance may be infrequent and/or intermittent. Contemporary architectures for human-robot interaction often rely on engineered human-interface devices or structured languages that require extensive prior training and inherently limit the kinds of information that humans and robots can communicate. Natural language, particularly when situated with a visual representation of the robot’s environment, allows humans and robots to exchange information about abstract goals, specific actions, and/or properties of the environment quickly and effectively. In addition, it serves as a mechanism to resolve inconsistencies in the mental models of the environment across the human-robot team. This article details a novel intelligence architecture that exploits a centralized representation of the environment to perform complex tasks in unstructured environments. The centralized environment model is informed by a visual perception pipeline, declarative knowledge, deliberate interactive estimation, and a multimodal interface. The language pipeline also exploits proactive symbol grounding to resolve uncertainty in ambiguous statements through inverse semantics. A series of experiments on three different, unmanned ground vehicles demonstrates the utility of this architecture through its robust ability to perform language-guided spatial navigation, mobile manipulation, and bidirectional communication with human operators. Experimental results give examples of component-level behaviors and overall system performance that guide a discussion on observed performance and opportunities for future innovation.
