This paper introduces model-based theory building as a feature of system dynamics (SD) with large potential. It presents a systemic approach to actualizing that potential, thereby opening up a new perspective on theory building in the social sciences. The question addressed is if and how SD enables the construction of high-quality theories. This contribution is based on field experiment type projects which have been focused on model-based theory building, specifically the construction of a middle-range theory — not a general one. The process of model building and validation is analysed from a theory-building perspective. The resulting theory is evaluated by means of a set of criteria for high-quality theories. As a conclusion, the insights thus gained are presented and condensed in a tentative set of heuristic principles for model-based theory building.

System dynamics as model-based theory building

The purpose of this contribution is to give an overview of the role of System Dynamics (SD) in the context of the evolution of the systems movement. This is necessary because SD is often erroneously taken as the systems approach as such, not as part of it. It is also requisite to show that the processes of evolution of both SD in particular and the Systems Movement as a whole are intimately linked and intertwined. Finally, in view of the purpose of the paper the actual and potential relationships between SD and the other strands of the systems movement are worked out. This way, complementarities and synergies are identified.

System Dynamics and the Evolution of the Systems Movement

The purpose of this article is to draw lessons for transdisciplinary modelling endeavours in social contexts. The chosen approach is to explore a research project that was part of the Swiss National Science Foundation’s ‘Swiss Priority Programme Environment’ (SPPE). The project focused on ecological issues and was realised in collaboration with local actors from a Swiss municipality. The case study design is used to analyse methodological issues related to the study of complex dynamic challenges. For example, for the purpose of policy design and learning, pertinent examples of the roles of heuristic frameworks and of simulation models are examined. Another challenge is to involve problem owners in the inquiry process. Furthermore, the transdisciplinary approach, in order to gain a better understanding, is addressed. These issues will be illustrated by means of system dynamics modelling and analysis of current challenges in the realm of solid waste management. Finally, the chapter makes several recommendations to researchers who want to investigate multifaceted, dynamically complex issues together with practitioners.

Policy Analysis and Design in Local Public Management: A System Dynamics Approach

The purpose of this paper is to introduce and conceptualize the topic of Model-Based Management (MBM) in organizations. The importance of qualitative and quantitative models for management is highlighted, and a research agenda for this new topic is proposed. This agenda promises to make a contribution to the use of models for higher managerial effectiveness. The role of models for managerial purposes has been under-researched and often misunderstood. In this paper, an analysis of the concept, role and function of models in the context of management and organization is undertaken. A new understanding of both the concept and role of models in management, grounded in system science, is proposed, which the planned research program will explore. The gain promised by such an innovative scope derives from its high potential: Both theory and practice can benefit from the envisaged research. Theoretically speaking, advances in management and organization science can be achieved, while on the practical side the gained insights will caution managers and leaders against succumbing to the traps of complexity, while radically improving their managerial effectiveness. Ultimately, MBM should enhance the intelligence, adaptiveness and viability of organizations of any kind: private, public, non-profit, large or small.

Model-Based Management (MBM): A Research Agenda

System Dynamics is a discipline for the modeling, simulation and control of complex dynamic systems. In this contribution, the methodology of System Dynamics-based modeling is argued to be a powerful and rigorous approach to theory-building. The strength of the pertinent process of theory development lies in its high standards for model validation, and in a combination of abductive reasoning with induction and deduction. The argument of the paper is underpinned by an application of System Dynamics to the elaboration of a theory in the new field of Cultural Dynamics.
