Adriana Foster,Neelam Chaudhary,Thomas Kim,Jennifer L. Waller,Joyce Wong,Michael Borish,Andrew Cordar,Benjamin Lok,Peter F. Buckley +8 more
TL;DR: Feedback on empathy in a VP interaction increased students’ empathy in encounters with SPs, as rated by trained assessors, whereas a simulation of patient shadowing did not.
Utilizing Real-time Human-Assisted Virtual Humans to Increase Real-world Interaction Empathy
Michael Borish,Andrew Cordar,Adriana Foster,Thomas Kim,James Murphy,Neelam Chaudhary,Benjamin Lok +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a hybrid virtual human approach where hidden workers assist the virtual human was proposed to help train medical students with empathy, and the results suggest that students who received feedback after their virtual patient interview did provide more empathetic statements, were more likely to develop good rapport, and did act more warm and caring as compared to the control group that did not receive feedback.
