Hydrosystems Engineering Uncertainty Analysis

This book was developed to facilitate implementation of a programmatic approach using selected scientific methods for screening climate change and disaster risks, and integrating appropriate resilience measures into water, hydropower, and dam investment projects. As the World Bank Group steps up its activities in both the water and energy sectors, the risks of climate change and disasters need to be better understood and managed to ensure sustainable, resilient, and cost-effective outcomes. This increased awareness is particularly important for hydropower, water supply reservoir, and dam projects, given that climate change is projected to significantly affect water resources by changing mean annual river flows and hydrologic variability, thereby causing more extreme droughts and floods. For many countries, hydropower is now the largest source of affordable renewable energy . Extending the Life of Reservoirs: Sustainable Sediment Management for Dams and Run-of-River Hydropower

Faults during dredging process often caused serious damages on dredging system. High maintenance costs and prolonged fault recovering process often make dredging production and profit low. An online fault diagnosis and prevention expert system that is aimed to prevent fault occurrence and to quicken the recovering process is introduced in this paper. For the complexity of fault judging and prevention process and frequently varying dynamics of dredging operations, hybrid structure and inference process are adopted in the expert system. ANNs are introduced to adapt the varying system dynamics and to predict system state. Designed expert application is also featured by online fault prevention and recovering decisions. Preliminary test has been carried out in actual engineering project and results of performance evaluation experiment are also introduced.

Online fault diagnosis and prevention expert system for dredgers

A mathematical model is formulated to describe incipient breaching of coastal barrier islands. The model is based on the assumptions of idealized breach morphology and is intended to describe the growth of breaches prior to possible closure by longshore sediment transport. The two coupled, non-linear equations governing breach width and depth are solved analytically for special cases. The analytical solutions explicitly exhibit an exponential behavior in breach dimensions and reveal that the macroscale process of breach growth is controlled by seven variables: initial width and depth of the breach, equilibrium width and depth of the breach, width of the barrier island, and maximum or initial net sediment transport rates at the bottom and sides of the breach. The literature is reviewed to compile general properties of coastal breaches, and sensitivity testing shows the model to be compatible with those observations. The model is applied to simulate the 1980 breach at Moriches Inlet, New York, and reasonable agreement is found.
