Apparatus for coating a support such as a monolithic catalyst support (5) comprises a dispenser (1) for dispensing a predetermined quantity of coating liquid, a containment (2) for the liquid and a source of vacuum (8, 9) which can be actuated to draw the entire quantity of coating liquid into the support (5). The apparatus and method are particularly useful for coating car catalysts without wastage and with increased design options.

Monolith coating apparatus and method therefor

Considerable research has been conducted on monolithic catalysts for various applications. Strategies toward coating monoliths are of equal interest and importance. In this paper, the preparation of monoliths and monolithic catalysts have been summarized. More specifically, a brief explanation for the manufacturing of ceramic and metallic monoliths has been provided. Also, different methods for coating γ-alumina, as a secondary support, are included. Techniques used to deposit metal-based species, zeolites and carbon onto monoliths are discussed. Furthermore, monoliths extruded with metal oxides, zeolites and carbon are described. The main foci are on the reasoning and understanding behind the preparation of monolithic catalysts. Ideas and concerns are also contributed to encourage better approaches when designing these catalysts. More importantly, the relevance of monolithic structures to reactions, such as the selective oxidation of alkanes, catalytic combustion for power generation and the preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide, has been described.

Monoliths: A Review of the Basics, Preparation Methods and Their Relevance to Oxidation

A method of coating a honeycomb monolith substrate comprising a plurality of channels with a liquid comprising a catalyst component comprises the steps of: (i) holding a honeycomb monolith substrate substantially vertically; (ii) introducing a pre- determined volume of the liquid into the substrate via open ends of the channels at a lower end of the substrate; (iii) sealingly retaining the introduced liquid within the substrate; (iv) inverting the substrate containing the retained liquid; and (v) applying a vacuum to open ends of the channels of the substrate at the inverted, lower end of the substrate to draw the liquid along the channels of the substrate.

Method of coating a monolith substrate with catalyst component

The present invention in certain embodiments is directed to a catalytic substrate suitable for use in a number of applications, including as a substrate in a catalytic converter or a particulate filter. Another aspect of the present invention is a filtering substrate suitable for use in a number of applications, including as a substrate in a particulate filter, such as a diesel particulate filter (DPF), or diesel particulate trap (DPT). The invention also provides an improved substrate for removing and/or eliminating pollutants from the exhaust of combustion engines. The catalytic substrate and filtering substrate provide, in certain embodiments, improvements in removing pollutants from an exhaust gas. The improvements include one or more of the following: faster light-off period, depth filtration of PM, less backpressure, lower probability of clogging, ability to be placed in multiple locations in the exhaust system including the manifold or the head itself, high probability of catalytic reaction, high conversion ratios of NOx, HC, and CO, a faster burnoff of PM, minimization of catalyst material use, and the like.

Provided is an exhaust article (catalyst) coated on a single substrate, such as a monolithic honeycomb having a plurality of channels along the axial length of the catalyst. Different washcoat compositions are deposited along the length the channel walls of the substrate beginning from either the inlet or outlet axial end of the substrate to form inlet and outlet catalyst layers, respectively. In the coating process, the channel walls are coated with catalyst washcoat compositions to lengths that are less than the substrates' axial length. The architecture of the resulting catalyst layers defines a plurality of zones along the length of the substrate. The properties of each zone of the catalyst can be optimized to address specific catalyst functions by manipulation of both the coating lengths and the catalyst washcoat compositions.

Multi-zone catalytic converter

Method and apparatus for coating catalytic converter substrates with an exact amount of a precious metal. In the course of operation of the apparatus, a hollow substrate to be treated having opposed open ends is transferred from a starting location such that one end is lowered into a dip pan into which has been introduced a predetermined amount of slurry material containing the precious metal. With the one end immersed in the slurry, a vacuum placed on the other end of the substrate draws up the entire charge of slurry from the dip pan to coat the lower portion of the substrate. Thereafter, the substrate is raised from the dip pan. The vacuum continues to operate to cause the coating to be evenly distributed on all the interior surfaces of the substrate. Then the substrate is rotated and again lowered so that the other end is immersed in another predetermined charge of the slurry and the process is repeated. Thereupon, the substrate is again raised from the dip pan. Again, the vacuum continues to operate for a predetermined period of time to assure even distribution of the coating. Then the substrate is again rotated to its original orientation, and returned to its starting location.

Metered charge system for catalytic coating of a substrate

A method for impregnating the interior skeletal structure of a ceramic monolithic catalyst support with a slurry of catalyst material is disclosed wherein a predetermined amount of catalyst slurry is metered into contact with a first end of the support. A cover is placed over the periphery of a second, opposite end of the support in sealing relation thereto to define a vacuum chamber adjacent to the second end. A vacuum is drawn on the cover to draw catalyst slurry into the skeletal structure from the second end whereby the interior skeletal structure is uniformly impregnated with the catalyst slurry.
