Methods for rendering augmented reality (AR) content are presented. An a priori defined 3D albedo model of an object is leveraged to adjust AR content so that is appears as a natural part of a scene. Disclosed devices recognize a known object having a corresponding albedo model. The devices compare the observed object to the known albedo model to determine a content transformation referred to as an estimated shading (environmental shading) model. The transformation is then applied to the AR content to generate adjusted content, which is then rendered and presented for consumption by a user.

Techniques for simulating interactions using an augmented reality device are described. Embodiments receive a request to paint over portions of a visual scene. Here, the visual scene is captured using one or more camera devices of the augmented reality device and is presented on a display of the augmented reality device. A first object in the visual scene corresponding to the first location is identified. Additionally, embodiments paint at least a portion of the first object as specified by the received request, and render a series of frames depicting the first object, such that the painted at least a portion of the first object is shown as painted when viewed from different perspectives using the augmented reality device.

Embodiments provide a visual scene for display, the visual scene captured using one or more camera devices of the augmented reality device. Embodiments adjust physical display geometry characteristics of the visual scene to correct for optimal projection. Additionally, illumination characteristics of the visual scene are modified based on environmental illumination data to improve realism of the visual scene when it is displayed. Embodiments further adjust display characteristics of the visual scene to improve tone mapping output. The adjusted visual scene is then output for display on the augmented reality device.
