TL;DR: It is concluded that providing additional calcium (using a dialysate calcium concentration of 8.0 mg/100 ml), the goal of which was to decrease secondary hyperparathyroidism, proved to be successful only in one patient and failed to do so in the five others.

TL;DR: It is suggested that PTH has a direct inhibitory effect on jejunal calcium, sodium, and water absorption.
Abstract: It seems well established that parathyroid hormone (PTH) increases intestinal calcium absorption and that this effect is indirect, possibly via enhanced production of 1,25 dihydroxy-cholecalciferol (1, 25-(OH)2 D3) by the kidney (1, 2). The time-lag between PTH administration and 1,25-(OH)2D3 synthesis is likely to be several hours (2). A possible direct PTH effect on the intestine in the absence of 1,25-(OH)2D3 mediation remains questionable.
