Journal ArticleDOI
Neonicotinoid-induced pathogen susceptibility is mitigated by Lactobacillus plantarum immune stimulation in a Drosophila melanogaster model.
Brendan A. Daisley,Brendan A. Daisley,Mark Trinder,Mark Trinder,Tim McDowell,Hylke Welle,Hylke Welle,Hylke Welle,Josh S. Dube,Sohrab Naushad Ali,Sohrab Naushad Ali,Hon S. Leong,Mark W. Sumarah,Gregor Reid,Gregor Reid +14 more
TL;DR: The results suggested that the immune deficiency (Imd) pathway is necessary for D. melanogaster survival in response to IMI toxicity and potential for probiotic lactobacilli to reduce IMI-induced susceptibility to infection.
Journal ArticleDOI
Probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus Reduces Organophosphate Pesticide Absorption and Toxicity to Drosophila melanogaster
Mark Trinder,Tim McDowell,Brendan A. Daisley,Brendan A. Daisley,Sohrab Naushad Ali,Hon S. Leong,Mark W. Sumarah,Gregor Reid,Gregor Reid +8 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that commonly used probiotic strains of lactobacilli could sequester, but not metabolize, organophosphate pesticides (parathion and chlorpyrifos) and was associated with decreased intestinal absorption and insect toxicity in appropriate models.
Journal ArticleDOI
Characterization and complete genome analysis of the surfactin-producing, plant-protecting bacterium Bacillus velezensis 9D-6
Elliot Grady,Elliot Grady,Jacqueline MacDonald,Margaret T. Ho,Brian Weselowski,Tim McDowell,Ori Solomon,Justin B. Renaud,Ze-Chun Yuan,Ze-Chun Yuan +9 more
TL;DR: The data presented here suggest B. velezensis 9D-6 as a candidate plant growth promoting bacterium (PGPB) and biopesticide, which uses a unique complement of antimicrobials, as well as other mechanisms, to protect plants against phytopathogens.
Journal ArticleDOI
Microbiota-Mediated Modulation of Organophosphate Insecticide Toxicity by Species-Dependent Interactions with Lactobacilli in a Drosophila melanogaster Insect Model.
Brendan A. Daisley,Brendan A. Daisley,Mark Trinder,Mark Trinder,Tim McDowell,Stephanie L. Collins,Stephanie L. Collins,Mark W. Sumarah,Gregor Reid +8 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the biotransformation of CP by the gut microbiota had biologically relevant and toxic consequences on host health and that certain probiotic lactobacilli may be beneficial in reducing CP toxicity.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Novel Millet-Based Probiotic Fermented Food for the Developing World.
Elisa Di Stefano,Jessica White,Shannon Seney,Sharareh Hekmat,Tim McDowell,Mark W. Sumarah,Gregor Reid,Gregor Reid +7 more
TL;DR: It is shown that sachets being provided to African communities to produce fermentation milk, can also be used to produce fermented millet, providing an option for when milk supplies are short, or if communities wish to utilize the nutrient-rich qualities of locally-grown millet.
