Design, Modeling and Testing of a Standalone Single Axis Active Solar Tracker using MATLAB/Simulink

This paper attempts to review and discuss the status and future prospects of renewable energy in Oman. Renewable energy sources like solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, and biomass have been revised. The electricity shortages and the challenges to overcome the increase in electrical demands for the near future have been discussed. The investigations found that solar, shore-wind and geothermal could play an important role in the future of renewable energy in country. Also, it is found that there is need to investigate the potential of offshore-wind, biomass, and hydro (tide, wave and ocean thermal energy). The appearance and weight of renewable energy in the higher education programs and the Oman commitment toward renewable energy have been discussed. The paper finishes with some conclusions and recommendations.

Renewable energy in Oman: Status and future prospects

A photovoltaic (PV) plant model is presented. It is based on a detailed electrothermal description of the panels forming strings that, in turn, form the power plant. It accounts for environmental working conditions, such as temperature and wind speed, and specific plant configuration, such as plant topology and power losses due to interconnections. The input variables of the model are the ambient temperature, irradiance, and wind speed. The model derives the working temperature of the panel taking into account also the power conversion performed by the panel; the electrical operating point is determined by simulating the actions done by the maximum power point tracker that operates at plant level. This model has been tested using a large database of experimental data from industrial PV plants characterized by power levels ranging from 250 kW to 1 MW. As shown, the model is capable to predict power production when “fed” by forecast irradiance, ambient temperature, and wind speed data.

Model of Photovoltaic Power Plants for Performance Analysis and Production Forecast

Maximum power point trackers are so important in photovoltaic systems to increase their efficiency. Many methods have been proposed to achieve the maximum power that the PV modules are capable of producing under different weather conditions. This paper proposed an intelligent method for maximum power point tracking based on fuzzy logic controller. The system consists of a photovoltaic solar module connected to a DC-DC Buck-boost converter. The system has been experienced under disturbance in the photovoltaic temperature and irradiation level. The simulation results show that the proposed maximum power tracker could track the maximum power accurately and successfully in all condition tested. Comparison of different performance parameters such as: tracking efficiency and response time of the system shows that the proposed method gives higher efficiency and better performance than the conventional perturbation and observation method.

A fuzzy logic control method for MPPT of PV systems

Increasing concern on pollution and global warming has prompted Photovoltaic (PV) system as one of the potential renewable and clean energy in power system generation. Power quality issue such as Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) has become an increasingly serious concern as more PV is integrated into the grid system. This encourages an extensive study to identify the challenge in power system network. In this paper, the impact of solar irradiance to current and voltage THD is studied using the simulation model developed in Simulink. This model is very useful to help the power system engineers and researcher to study the electrical behavior of the PV system. The PV model developed is tested by using the real solar irradiance data taken from UTeM laboratory, and were experimentally tested to validate the model. The results show that the developed PV model is able to predict the PV system behavior, particularly on THD.

The impact of grid-connected PV systems on Harmonic Distortion

The main purpose of this paper is to develop a photovoltaic simulation system with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) function using Matlab/Simulink software in order to simulate, evaluate and predict the behaviors of the real photovoltaic system A model of the most important component in the photovoltaic system, the solar module, is the first to have been established The characteristics of the established solar module model were simulated and compared with those of the original field test data under different temperature and irradiance conditions After that, a model of a photovoltaic system with maximum power point tracker, which was developed using DC-DC buck-boost converter with the perturbation and observation method, was then established and simulated According to comparisons of the simulation results, the I–V curves of the established solar module model could closely match those of the original field test data, and the model of the photovoltaic system that was built in this paper can track the maximum power point of the system successfully and accurately under arbitrary temperature and irradiance conditions The accuracy and practicability of the photovoltaic simulation system proposed in this paper are, therefore, validated

Analysis and simulation of characteristics and maximum power point tracking for photovoltaic systems

A permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is a crucial device for power conversion in an energy system. The cogging torque of the PMSM is a crucial output characteristic, the robustness of which affects the operational reliability of the energy system. Therefore, the robust design optimization (RDO) of cogging torque has aroused widespread concern. There are several challenges in designing a robust cogging torque PMSM. In particular, some design parameters contain repetitive units, and the finite element analysis (FEA) method is time-consuming. State-of-the-art RDO methods usually treat these uncertainties from repetitive units as the same parameter, which neglects the fluctuation of the manufacturing process and cannot obtain a robust solution for the cogging torque of the motor efficiently and accurately. In order to solve this issue, an approximate modeling method based on manufacturing uncertainties analysis for RDO is proposed in this paper. First, the peak-to-peak value of cogging torque (Tcpp) is used to characterize the cogging torque, which is decoupled to an ideal component and fluctuation component produced by the center values and manufacturing tolerances of design parameters. The design of experiments (DoE) and simulation of the two components are carried out. Then, these two components are approximated separately, and the approximate model of Tcpp is obtained by adding the two components. Finally, the proposed approximate model is embedded into the RDO algorithm, and the PMSM design scheme for good Tcpp robustness is obtained. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through a case study of the PMSM.
