We report a general synthesis of high-quality cubic (α-phase) and hexagonal (β-phase) NaREF4 (RE:  Pr to Lu, Y) nanocrystals (nanopolyhedra, nanorods, nanoplates, and nanospheres) and NaYF4:Yb,Er/Tm nanocrystals (nanopolyhedra and nanoplates) via the co-thermolysis of Na(CF3COO) and RE(CF3COO)3 in oleic acid/oleylamine/1-octadecene. By tuning the ratio of Na/RE, solvent composition, reaction temperature and time, we can manipulate phase, shape, and size of the nanocrystals. On the basis of its α → β phase transition behavior, along the rare-earth series, NaREF4 can be divided into three groups (I:  Pr and Nd; II:  Sm to Tb; III:  Dy to Lu, Y). The whole controlled-synthesis mechanism can be explained from the point of view of free energy. Photoluminescent measurements indicate that the value of I610/I590 and the overall emission intensity of the NaEuF4 nanocrystals are highly correlative with the symmetries of the Eu3+ ions in both the lattice and the surface.

High-Quality Sodium Rare-Earth Fluoride Nanocrystals: Controlled Synthesis and Optical Properties

The synthesis and study of so-called “nanoparticles”, particles with diameters in the range of 1−20 nm, has become a major interdisciplinary area of research over the past 10 years. Semiconductor nanoparticles promise to play a major role in several new technologies. The intense interest in this area derives from their unique chemical and electronic properties, which gives rise to their potential use in the fields of nonlinear optics, luminescence, electronics, catalysis, solar energy conversion, and optoelectronics, as well as other areas. Nanocrystalline semiconductors: Synthesis, properties, and perspectives

We review the syntheses, optical properties, and biological applications of cadmium selenide (CdSe) and cadmium selenide-zinc sulfide (CdSe-ZnS) quantum dots (QDs) and gold (Au) and silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs). Specifically, we selected the syntheses of QDs and Au and Ag NPs in aqueous and organic phases, size- and shape-dependent photoluminescence (PL) of QDs and plasmon of metal NPs, and their bioimaging applications. The PL properties of QDs are discussed with reference to their band gap structure and various electronic transitions, relations of PL and photoactivated PL with surface defects, and blinking of single QDs. Optical properties of Ag and Au NPs are discussed with reference to their size- and shape-dependent surface plasmon bands, electron dynamics and relaxation, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The bioimaging applications are discussed with reference to in vitro and in vivo imaging of live cells, and in vivo imaging of cancers, tumor vasculature, and lymph nodes. Other aspects of the review are in vivo deep tissue imaging, multiphoton excitation, NIR fluorescence and SERS imaging, and toxic effects of NPs and their clearance from the body.

Semiconductor quantum dots and metal nanoparticles: syntheses, optical properties, and biological applications

The synthesis of II−VI semiconductor nanocrystals doped with transition metals has proved to be particularly difficult. In the case of CdSe quantum dots (QDs) produced via high-temperature pyrolysis in trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO), specially designed precursors used in this study appear to be necessary to successfully incorporate low levels of Mn. A simple etching experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements reveal that most of the dopant atoms reside in the surface layers of the inorganic lattice. The dopant dramatically affects 113Cd magic angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance NMR spectra; the observed paramagnetic shift and decreased longitudinal relaxation time are consistent with Mn incorporated in the QDs. Paramagnetic atoms in QDs generate large effective magnetic fields, which implies that magnetooptical experiments can be performed simply by doping. Organometallic Synthesis and Spectroscopic Characterization of Manganese-Doped CdSe Nanocrystals

We review the synthesis of semiconductor nanocrystals/colloidal quantum dots in organic solvents with special emphasis on earth-abundant and toxic heavy metal free compounds. Following the Introduction, section 2 defines the terms related to the toxicity of nanocrystals and gives a comprehensive overview on toxicity studies concerning all types of quantum dots. Section 3 aims at providing the reader with the basic concepts of nanocrystal synthesis. It starts with the concepts currently used to describe the nucleation and growth of monodisperse particles and next takes a closer look at the chemistry of the inorganic core and its interactions with surface ligands. Section 4 reviews in more detail the synthesis of different families of semiconductor nanocrystals, namely elemental group IV compounds (carbon nanodots, Si, Ge), III–V compounds (e.g., InP, InAs), and binary and multinary metal chalcogenides. Finally, the authors’ view on the perspectives in this field is given.

Synthesis of Semiconductor Nanocrystals, Focusing on Nontoxic and Earth-Abundant Materials.

The synthesis of CdS and CdSe nanocrystallites using the thermolysis of several dithio- or diselenocarbamato complexes of cadmium in trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) is reported. The nanodispersed materials obtained show quantum size effects in their optical spectra and exhibit near band-edge luminescence. The influence of experimental parameters on the properties of the nanocrystallites is discussed. HRTEM images of these materials show well-defined, crystalline nanosized particles. Standard size fractionation procedures can be performed in order to narrow the size dispersion of the samples. The TOPO-capped CdS and CdSe nanocrystallites and simple organic bridging ligands, such as 2,2‘-bipyrimidine, are used as the starting materials for the preparation of novel nanocomposites. The optical properties shown by these new nanocomposites are compared with those of the starting nanodispersed materials.
