The tunneling current from a scanning tunneling microscope was used to image and dissociate single O{sub 2} molecules on the Pt(111) surface in the temperature range of 40 to 150K. After dissociation, the two oxygen atoms are found one to three lattice constants apart. The dissociation rate as a function of current was found to vary as I{sup 0.8{plus_minus}0.2} , I{sup 1.8{plus_minus}0.2} , and I{sup 2.9{plus_minus}0.3} for sample biases of 0.4, 0.3, and 0.2V, respectively. These rates are explained using a general model for dissociation induced by intramolecular vibrational excitations via resonant inelastic electron tunneling. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Single Molecule Dissociation by Tunneling Electrons

Carbon allotropes built from rings of two-coordinate atoms, known as cyclo[n]carbons, have fascinated chemists for many years, but until now they could not be isolated or structurally characterized because of their high reactivity. We generated cyclo[18]carbon (C18) using atom manipulation on bilayer NaCl on Cu(111) at 5 kelvin by eliminating carbon monoxide from a cyclocarbon oxide molecule, C24O6 Characterization of cyclo[18]carbon by high-resolution atomic force microscopy revealed a polyynic structure with defined positions of alternating triple and single bonds. The high reactivity of cyclocarbon and cyclocarbon oxides allows covalent coupling between molecules to be induced by atom manipulation, opening an avenue for the synthesis of other carbon allotropes and carbon-rich materials from the coalescence of cyclocarbon molecules.

An sp-hybridized molecular carbon allotrope, cyclo[18]carbon

Triangulene, the smallest triplet-ground-state polybenzenoid (also known as Clar's hydrocarbon), has been an enigmatic molecule ever since its existence was first hypothesized. Despite containing an even number of carbons (22, in six fused benzene rings), it is not possible to draw Kekule-style resonant structures for the whole molecule: any attempt results in two unpaired valence electrons. Synthesis and characterization of unsubstituted triangulene has not been achieved because of its extreme reactivity, although the addition of substituents has allowed the stabilization and synthesis of the triangulene core and verification of the triplet ground state via electron paramagnetic resonance measurements. Here we show the on-surface generation of unsubstituted triangulene that consists of six fused benzene rings. The tip of a combined scanning tunnelling and atomic force microscope (STM/AFM) was used to dehydrogenate precursor molecules. STM measurements in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that triangulene keeps its free-molecule properties on the surface, whereas AFM measurements resolved its planar, threefold symmetric molecular structure. The unique topology of such non-Kekule hydrocarbons results in open-shell π-conjugated graphene fragments that give rise to high-spin ground states, potentially useful in organic spintronic devices. Our generation method renders manifold experiments possible to investigate triangulene and related open-shell fragments at the single-molecule level.

Imaging the charge distribution within a single molecule

The concept of using single molecules as key building blocks for logic gates, diodes and transistors to perform basic functions of digital electronic devices at the molecular scale has been explored over the past decades. However, in addition to mimicking the basic functions of current silicon devices, molecules often possess unique properties that have no parallel in conventional materials and promise new hybrid devices with novel functions that cannot be achieved with equivalent solid-state devices. The most appealing example is the molecular switch. Over the past decade, molecular switches on surfaces have been intensely investigated. A variety of external stimuli such as light, electric field, temperature, tunneling electrons and even chemical stimulus have been used to activate these molecular switches between bistable or even multiple states by manipulating molecular conformations, dipole orientations, spin states, charge states and even chemical bond formation. The switching event can occur either on surfaces or in break junctions. The aim of this review is to highlight recent advances in molecular switches triggered by various external stimuli, as investigated by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (LT-STM) and the break junction technique. We begin by presenting the molecular switches triggered by various external stimuli that do not provide single molecule selectivity, referred to as non-selective switching. Special focus is then given to selective single molecule switching realized using the LT-STM tip on surfaces. Single molecule switches operated by different mechanisms are reviewed and discussed. Finally, molecular switches embedded in self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and single molecule junctions are addressed.

Towards single molecule switches

From scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy experiments it is shown that control over the charge-state of individual molecules adsorbed on surfaces can be obtained by choosing a substrate system with an appropriate workfunction. The distribution of the additional charge is studied using difference images. These images show marked intramolecular contrast.

On metallic and semiconductor surfaces functional nanostructures can be built with atomic scale precision using the tip of an atomic force microscope/scanning tunneling microscope. In contrast, controlled lateral manipulation on insulators has not been reported. The traditional pushing and pulling based manipulation methods cannot be used for molecules adsorbed on insulating films because of the unfavorable ratio between diffusion barrier and desorption energy. Here, we demonstrate that molecules adsorbed on insulating films can be laterally manipulated in a controlled way by injecting inelastically tunneling electrons at well-defined positions in a molecule. The technique was successfully applied to several different molecules.

Controlled Lateral Manipulation of Molecules on Insulating Films by STM

In chemistry and physics symmetry principles are all important, for example, leading to the selection rules governing optical transitions. We have investigated the influence of the molecular symmetry on the surface potential landscape of molecules in the limit of weak molecule-substrate binding. For this purpose, the induced lateral motion of Cu(II)-tetraazaphthalocyanine molecules, for which four symmetry distinct isomers exist, on NaCl(100) was studied by scanning tunneling microscopy. This nonthermal diffusion induced by inelastic excitations is found to be qualitatively different for all four symmetry distinct isomers, demonstrating that symmetry governs the surface potential landscape.
