A combustion control system for an automotive engine in a vehicle. A sidestream exhaust gas tube has a scoop inlet in the engine's exhaust-gas conduit. A first metallic tube portion leads from the scoop to a point forward of the vehicle's radiator, so that it directly receives ambient air on its exterior surface, thereby cooling the exhaust gas to near ambient-temperature. A water trap then removes condensed water from the sidestream exhaust gas, along with entrained particles. A final insulating tube portion extends rearwardly of the radiator and helps to limit reheating of the cooled exhaust gas while conducting it to a reactor device. There, an inlet for the exhaust gas receives the cooled exhaust gas and conducts it to first ejector for drawing in aqueous liquid and to a second ejector for drawing in atmospheric air and mixing it with the gas-liquid mixture from the first ejector. The reactor's outlet is connected to an axial inlet of a device having a vortex chamber with a tangential inlet connected to a gas supply at substantially atmospheric pressure. An axial outlet from the vortex chamber is connected directly to a gas inlet opening of the engine, leading to the intake manifold, which is free from obstructions and leads in one chamber to the intake valves of all cylinders or combustion chambers.

There is disclosed a spark-ignited internal combustion engine wherein a blend of gasoline and alcohol is separated into its gasoline and alcohol phases, with the gasoline being atomized within an induction system, and the alcohol being dissociated into vapors which are mixed with the atomized gasoline in the induction system to provide the fuel for the engine.

An ultra-compact combination exhaust muffler and aftertreatment element and water trap assembly provides exhaust flow through an aftertreatment element surrounded by an annular water collection space receiving water diverted and shed from an upper dome cap above the aftertreatment element and below the upper outlet. In a further embodiment, the assembly includes housing sections separable from each other at a service joint axially between axial ends of the aftertreatment element for ease of servicing. In a further aspect, the aftertreatment element has an axial end within a housing section saving axial extension space.

This application discloses an exhaust gas recirculation system in an internal combustion engine. The system comprises: An EGR pipe which interconnects an exhaust pipe and an intake pipe of the engine; An EGR valve mounted on said EGR pipe; An EGR cooler mounted on said EGR pipe upstream of said EGR valve; A by-pass pipe arranged parallel to said EGR cooler; A thermosensor which detects the EGR gas temperature; and, A selection valve arranged at the connection point of said by-pass pipe to said EGR pipe, said selection valve co-operating with said thermosensor so that when the EGR gas temperature is low, the EGR gas passes through said by-pass pipe.

An internal combustion engine power cycle wherein a combustion chamber is fitted with an inlet valve, an outlet valve, and movable piston coupled to perform work, includes an generator to form a stream of greater than about 95% molecular oxygen from atmospheric air and a nitrogen waste gas stream; a source of fuel; and a source of liquid water. The power cycle includes admission of the molecular oxygen into the chamber, injection of the fuel into the chamber with combustion, and injection of atomized water into the chamber for generation of steam.
