Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new Helicobacter pylori lipid A having a specific chemical structure, low in toxicity, low in pyrogenicity, and useful for immunostimulators, infectious disease medicines, antitumor medicines, antiviral medicines, etc., as a new immunologically active substance. SOLUTION: A new Helicobacter pylori lipid A having a chemical structure of the formula. The compound has an adjuvant activity, a B-cell activation action, a natural killer(NK) cell activity, an antitumor activity, an antiviral activity, and specific and nonspecific infection-preventing actions, and is low in toxicity, very low in pyrogenicity and useful for agents for producing various kinds of lymphokines, immunostimulators, medicines for treating and preventing various kinds of infections diseases, septicemia, rheumatoid arthritis, etc., antitumor medicines, antiviral medicines, etc. The compound is obtained by culturing Helicobacter pylori, centrifugally collecting the bacteria from the culture solution, lyophilizing the obtained bacterium pellets, defatting the product, subjecting the defatted product to an extraction treatment by a warm phenol/water method, hydrolyzing the extract, and subsequently fractionating the hydrolyzate by silica gel chromatrography.
