A composite material, contains a polymer, a polymerizer, a corresponding catalyst for the polymerizer, and a plurality of capsules. The polymerizer is in the capsules. The composite material is self-healing.

Multifunctional autonomically healing composite material

A self-healing coating includes a polymer matrix, a polymerizer, and a set of capsules containing a corresponding activator for the polymerizer. The polymerizer may be present in another set of capsules, or the polymerizer may be phase separated from the polymer matrix. The coating may be prepared by depositing a coating composition on a substrate and solidifying the coating composition, where the coating composition includes the polymerizer, the activator capsules and a matrix precursor. A combination of polymerizer capsules and activator capsules may be part of a kit, which may be used to provide self-healing properties to a coating. The polymerizer and the activator may be wet-curable, and coatings containing the polymerizer and activator may be able to self-heal when in contact with water.

A composite material includes an elastomer matrix, a set of first capsules containing a polymerizer, and a set of second capsules containing a corresponding activator for the polymerizer. The polymerizer may be a polymerizer for an elastomer. The composite material may be prepared by combining a first set of capsules containing a polymerizer, a second set of capsules containing a corresponding activator for the polymerizer, and a matrix precursor, and then solidifying the matrix precursor to form an elastomeric matrix.

Self-healing elastomer system

A composite material includes a polymer matrix, a polymerizer, and a plurality of capsules containing a corresponding activator for the polymerizer. The composite material can also include an adhesion promoter, and the polymerizer can be phase separated from the polymer matrix. The composite material can be made by dispersing the polymerizer and capsules into the polymer matrix. These composite materials can exhibit improved environmental stability, and can be used with a wider variety of activators.

Self-healing polymers

A reinforced polymeric matrix comprising a glass mat and a norbornene polymer surrounding the glass mat, the glass mat is composed of at least one glass fiber treated with a silane coupling agent and a binder adhering the glass fiber(s) to the norbornene polymer; the binder is selected from polyolefins, vinyl aromatic polymers, and ring-opened polymers of at least one norbornene-type monomer containing at least one norbornene group. Process for making a reinforced polymeric matrix comprises positioning a glass mat within a mold, the glass mat having been treated with a hydrocarbon polymer binder; mixing a plurality of streams, one stream containing a catalyst of a metathesis catalyst system, another stream containing a cocatalyst of a metathesis system, and at least one of the streams containing at least one norbornene-type monomer which is liquid at room temperature to form a mixed stream; introducing the mixed stream into the mold around the mat; polymerizing by ring opening the monomer(s) in the mold; and extracting from the mold the reinforced polymeric matrix, wherein the norbornene polymer is thermoset.

Reinforced polymeric matrix

PURPOSE: To delay pot life of a reaction solution and shorten curing time in a metallic mold by using respective specific metathetic catalyst system and pot life regulator in carrying out bulk ring opening polymerization of a norbornene-based monomer mixture. CONSTITUTION: A norbornene-based monomer mixture of tri- or polymers containing tricyclopentadiene is subjected to bulk ring opening polymerization in the presence of a molybdenum-based metathetic catalyst (e.g. tridodecylammonium molybdate) and a cocatalyst (e.g. an alkylaluminum halide) using 5-alkenyl-2-norbornenes (preferably 5-vinylbicyclo[2.2.1]hept-2-ene, etc.) as a pot life regulator of the reaction solution. Furthermore, the reaction is normally carried out in a metallic mold and the metallic mold temperature is preferably 50-120°C at that time. The mold clamping pressure may be normally 0.1-100kg/cm 2 . Production of norbornene-based polymer

PURPOSE: To obtain the aimed high-purity substance capable of reaction injection molding, by purifying crude dicyclopentadiene through distillation in the presence of an antioxidant in the respective divided steps for removing low-boiling impurities and high-boiling impurities. CONSTITUTION: Crude dicyclopentadiene is purified by distillation. In the process, the distillation is carried out in the presence of an antioxidant in an amount of ≥200ppm, preferably 500W10,000ppm based on the amount of the fed raw material at ≤120°C in distillation columns in the respective divided steps of (A) a step for removing low-boiling impurities and (B) a step for removing high-boiling impurities. The step (A) is carried out at 80W120°C column bottom temperature under 20W150torr vacuum degree and the step (B) is conducted at 70W120°C under 10W100torr vacuum degree. Packed columns are preferred as the distillation columns. A sublimable antioxidant, e.g. 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol, etc., is preferred as the antioxidant and fed into the raw material or reflux liquid so as to be present in the whole columns. Purification of dicyclopentadiene

PURPOSE:To obtain the subject polymer having excellent mechanical strength by carrying out bulk ring-opening polymerization of a norbornene-type monomer with a metathesis catalyst in the presence of glass mat containing a hydrocarbon polymer as a binder. CONSTITUTION:The objective polymer having excellent adhesivity between glass mat and norbornene-type polymer can be produced by providing a glass mat containing a hydrocarbon polymer (preferably aromatic vinyl polymer) as a binder, placing the glass mat in a mold, pouring a reaction liquid produced by mixing 1mol of a norbornene-type monomer (preferably dicyclo-pentadiene, etc.), and preferably 0.1-10m-mol of a metathesis catalyst (e.g., tungsten) into the mold and polymerizing the monomer preferably at 50-120 deg.C under a pressure of 0.1-100kg/cm for <=5min.
