In this survey, we present state-of-the-art bitrate adaptation algorithms for HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS). As a key distinction from other streaming approaches, the bitrate adaptation algorithms in HAS are chiefly executed at each client, i.e. , in a distributed manner. The objective of these algorithms is to ensure a high quality of experience (QoE) for viewers in the presence of bandwidth fluctuations due to factors like signal strength, network congestion, network reconvergence events, etc. While such fluctuations are common in public Internet, they can also occur in home networksor even managed networks where there is often admission control and QoS tools. Bitrate adaptation algorithms may take factors like bandwidth estimations, playback buffer fullness, device features, viewer preferences, and content features into account, albeit with different weights. Since the viewer’s QoE needs to be determined in real-time during playback, objective metrics are generally used including number of buffer stalls, duration of startup delay, frequency and amount of quality oscillations, and video instability. By design, the standards for HAS do not mandate any particular adaptation algorithm, leaving it to system builders to innovate and implement their own method. This survey provides an overview of the different methods proposed over the last several years.

A Survey on Bitrate Adaptation Schemes for Streaming Media Over HTTP

Dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP (DASH) has recently been widely deployed in the Internet. It, however, does not impose any adaptation logic for selecting the quality of video fragments requested by clients. In this paper, we propose a novel Markov decision-based rate adaptation scheme for DASH aiming to maximize the quality of user experience under time-varying channel conditions. To this end, our proposed method takes into account those key factors that make a critical impact on visual quality, including video playback quality, video rate switching frequency and amplitude, buffer overflow/underflow, and buffer occupancy. Besides, to reduce computational complexity, we propose a low-complexity sub-optimal greedy algorithm which is suitable for real-time video streaming. Our experiments in network test-bed and real-world Internet all demonstrate the good performance of the proposed method in both objective and subjective visual quality.

m DASH: A Markov Decision-Based Rate Adaptation Approach for Dynamic HTTP Streaming

Recently, Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) has attracted significant attention. In this paper, we consider DASH-based transmission of scalable videos in wireless broadband access networks (e.g., long-term evolution and WiMAX), and propose three methods to enhance the quality of experience of wireless DASH users. First, we design an improved mapping scheme from scalable video coding layers to DASH layers that can provide the desired bitrates, enhance the video end-to-end throughput, and reduce the HTTP communication overhead. Second, we develop a DASH-friendly scheduling and resource allocation algorithm by integrating the DASH-based media delivery and the radio-level adaptation via a cross-layer approach. It utilizes the characteristics of video content and scalable video coding, and greatly reduces the possibility of video playback interruption by considering the client buffer status. The optimization problem is formulated as a mixed binary integer programming problem, and is solved by a subgradient method. Finally, a DASH proxy-based bitrate stabilization algorithm is proposed to improve the video playback smoothness that can achieve the desired tradeoff between playback quality and stability. Simulations with the Qualnet tool demonstrate that our schemes achieve better performances than other methods in the literature.

QoE-Driven Cross-Layer Optimization for Wireless Dynamic Adaptive Streaming of Scalable Videos Over HTTP

HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS) is the most recent attempt regarding video quality adaptation. It enables cheap and easy to implement streaming technology without the need for a dedicated infrastructure. By using a combination of TCP and HTTP it has the advantage of reusing all the existing technologies designed for ordinary web. Equally important is that HAS traffic passes through firewalls and works well when NAT is deployed. The rate adaptation controller of HAS, commonly called adaptive bitrate selection (ABR), is currently receiving a lot of attention from both industry and academia. However, most of the research efforts concentrate on a specific aspect or a particular methodology without considering the overall context. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of the most significant research activities in the area of client-side HTTP-based adaptive video streaming. It starts by decomposing the ABR module into three subcomponents, namely: resource estimation function, chunk request scheduling, and adaptation module. Each subcomponent encapsulates a particular function that is vital to the operation of an ABR scheme. A review of each of the subcomponents and how they interact with each other is presented. Furthermore, those external factors that are known to have a direct impact on the performance of an ABR module, such as content nature, CDN, and context, are discussed. In conclusion, this paper provides an extensive reference for further research in the field.

Adaptive Bitrate Selection: A Survey

DASH, the Dynamic adaptive video streaming over hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP), has become the de-facto video delivery mechanism nowadays, which takes advantage of the existing low cost and wide-spread HTTP platforms. Standards like MPEG-DASH defines the bitstreams conformance and decoding process, while leaving the bitrate adaptive algorithm open for research. So far, most DASH researches focus on the constant bitrate video delivery. In this paper, various bitrate (VBR) video delivery is investigated in the on-demand streaming scenario. Detailed instant bitrates of future segments are exploited in the proposed adaptation method to grasp the fluctuation traits of the VBR video. Meanwhile, the adaptation problem is formulated as an optimization process with the proposed internal QoE goal function, which keeps a good balance between various requirements. Besides, the parameters within the internal QoE function can be tuned to guarantee the flexibility of meeting different preferences. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed QoE-based video adaptation method outperforms the state-of-the-art method with a good margin.

QoE-Driven Dynamic Adaptive Video Streaming Strategy With Future Information

Video streaming on the Internet is increasingly using Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH), which allows a client to dynamically adjust its video quality by choosing the appropriate quality level for each segment based on the current download rate. In this paper we examine the impact of Scalable Video Coding (SVC) on the client's quality selection policy. Given a variable download rate, when should the client try to maximize the current segment's video quality, and when should it instead play it safe and ensure a minimum level of quality for future segments? We use a combination of analysis, dynamic programming, and simulation to show that a client should use a diagonal quality selection policy, which combines prefetching with backfilling to balance both of these concerns. We also illustrate the conditions that affect the slope of the diagonal policy.
