Eric Ries was born in September 1978. He graduated from Yale University and moved to silicon Valley in the beginning of the millennium. He pioneered the philosophy of Lean Startup, based on his experience with multiple startups, primary being IMVU which he co-founded along with Will Harvey in 2004. Eric Ries originated his Lean Startup philosophy after getting inspired from the Japanese Philosophy of Lean Manufacturing.

This paper reports the results of a field experiment where a Near Field Communication (NFC) enabled mobile phone was used as a user interface element so as to enable home-dwelling elderly people to choose their meals to be delivered by means of a home care service. The primary research focus was on examining the suitability of a touch-based user interface in the everyday life activities of elderly users. The eight-week experiment took place in the autumn of 2006. The results show that the touch-based user interface was easy to learn and adopt and the users were able to successfully use it regardless of their physical or cognitive weaknesses.

The rapid downfall of the Nokia software ecosystem has radically altered the landscape of software industry in Finland in recent years. There has been a shift from largely corporate driven way of working, which is often dominant in large companies, to more agile practices, and in general software organizations are seeking new, leaner ways of composing, delivering, and using software also inside already established companies. To accelerate this transformation in large scale, a collaborative research program has been created, called Need for Speed (N4S). In this paper, we give an insight to the joint goals and concrete actions of the program and discuss the motivations of individual companies that are participating in the program. As one concrete goal of the project, we introduce the concept of Mercury business, where the principles of the Lean startup framework are applied in a more conventional industrial setting.

Physical browsing is a new intuitive human computer interfacing paradigm for mobile users. Services, such as information retrieval, peer to peer communication, payment or ticketing, and professional applications can be initiated by simply touching an object with a users personal device. This paradigm can be implemented with RFID technology. A number of major companies in the fields of mobile communications, electronics and financing have joined forces in an effort to commercialise this human computer interaction paradigm with the brand name Near Field Communication (NFC). NFC is based on existing technology using 13.56 MHz RFIDs and international standards. NFC forum is creating standards and recommendations for the upper level protocols and application models. VTT is leading a European-wide project which develops and pilots NFC technology. This report describes the findings and results of the first project year. The report outlines the concept of Physical browsing, NFC technology, its main applications, and describes a pilot case with a meal service for elderly citizens. An NFC Bluetooth gateway prototype has been designed and the first experiments are briefly described. Security and privacy issues relevant to NFC are described. The main business models, namely those driven by financial institutions, mobile operators or other parties, are discussed. A look at major trials and roll-outs of contactless payment is given. Some solutions to the dilemma of scarce NFC services and low penetration of NFC phones are suggested.

Agile, lean processes have become the de-facto way to operate in the domain of software intensive products. Methodologies such as the lean startup are reshaping the way new companies and even well-established enterprises seek new opportunities in their operations. In contrast, in research, little has changed during that time - organizations that fund research still expect a solid, linear research plan. In this paper, we present an attempt to challenge this model in software research, based on 7 years of experiences in two large, national, industry-led projects that followed a more agile mindset. Furthermore, we also provide an insight to key learnings and best practices of running software research in agile fashion.
