The harmonics are considered a problem for power system. The problem is present when Thyristor Controlled Reactor (TCR) is used as a poor factor correction technique. This paper gives a study for reduction of harmonics which produce from TCR. Actually, the TCR system is not exist as a standalone compensator but combined with other configuration such as Fixed Capacitor (FC), Thyristor Switching Capacitor (TSC), Mechanically Switched Capacitor (MSC), and the filter. The model in this paper consists of a TCR combined with a FC. The model of TCR may be connected in star, delta, and hybrid. Sources of regular and irregular harmonics will be discussed. Many techniques will be introduced for reducing the harmonics. 12-pulse technique (Hybrid) is shown as one effective method to suppress that harmonics. The simulation result will be displayed for RL load at the different topologies of the TCR under condition keeping the same rating for the reactive power of TCR.

Reduction of harmonics generated by thyristor controlled reactor for RL loads

This paper considers a Matlab-Simulink Model of a system for a load reactive power compensation with consisting of a thyristor-controlled binary switched capacitors (TBSC) and a thyristor controlled reactor (TCR). The capacitors ensure stepwise compensation of reactive power, while the controlled inductance makes it possible to achieve smooth changing of the resulting compensating power within the limits of the minimal capacity in the binary capacitors series. The model uses a very simple algorithm of capacitor control, provided with a logical system that prevents current surges in the moments when capacitors are being connected to the network. The switching of capacitors is set by a closed system for maintenance of the maximal power coefficient. To regulate the inductance in TCR, an invariant system of phase control is used, which maintains the unit value of the power coefficient in the network irrespective of load changes. The realization of the system in the model is maximally close to its possible hardware realization. The functioning of the model has been tested in a wide range of variation of the reactive load power, and the testing confirmed the efficiency of combining a switchable series of binary capacitors and a thyristor-controlled inductance when using the proposed control algorithms.

A Matlab-Simulink model of network reactive power compensation based on binary switchable capacitors and thyristor-controlled reactor

In this paper improvement of power quality and efficiency of transmission line has been discussed using Static VAR Compensator (SVC). The Matlab Simulink model of SVC addressed here comprises of Thyristor Switched Capacitor (TSC) and Thyristor Controlled Reactor(TCR) which gave the  enhanced results in terms of voltage , current and improved power quality in the transmission line font-weight:bold'>: Mangrove ecosystem plays an important role in preventing cyclones and tsunamis at estuaries from entering into interior land and in the economic development of local inhabitants.  They have peculiar adaptations such as strong supporting interlocking and breathing root system called pneumatophores, vivipary mode of reproduction, salt regulation and nutrient retention. They flourished well in  pulicat lake till 18 th century.  Now mangrove vegetation remains as small patches only in the pulicat lake.  They are largely destroyed by human induced activities such as Urbanisation and Agriculture.  The present study documents the checklist of true mangroves and their associates present in the pulicat lake which helps to develop the conservative methods to protect leftover patches of Mangroves..

Improving Power Quality of a Transmission Line using Static VAR Compensator

Due to industrialization, the use of inductive load has increasing day by day, as we already know most of the industries are using the induction motors. It is inherently inductive in nature and hence have low lagging power factor, due to reactive power which gives heavy penalties to consumers by electricity board. To nullify the effect of reactive power on system, power factor should be improved. There are many methods for improvement of power factor such as Static Capacitors, synchronous condenser and phase advancers. But in our project we used recent FACTS device that is static VAR compensator (SVC) for upgrading of power factor as well as to make the motor in secured level. In addition to this, digitalized version of SVC that is Digital- SVC is designed. This compensation technique facilitates automatic control on the reactive power which is depending on load requirement. Accurate compensation technique is used to mitigate the lagging reactive power, at varying load, for single phase induction motor. So as to maintain power factor near unity always this results in efficient electrical power system.

Design of Digital-Static VAR Compensator for Induction Motor

A case study is carried out on 1 KV A, 50 Hz distribution transformers. An innovative transient free adaptive static V AR compensator is designed and developed. An ARM is used to carry out process development which helps in automatic reactive power compensation in addition to power factor correction. The static voltage compensation (SVC) needs to use capacitor bank in many series and parallel combination in addition to star and delta connections. These capacitors are considered as step increment rather than fractional increment due to availability of capacitors in the market.

An Innovative Transient Free Adaptive SVC for Reactive Power Compensation and PF Correction Using ARM Controller

The electrical distribution systems are consists of large losses as the loads are wide spread, less effective reactive power compensation facilities and their improper control which results in ineffective utilization of electrical energy. In solution of that the investigation is carried on static VAr compensator (SVC) with thyristor binary compensator. The work deals with the analytical studies and implementation of simulation model of static VAr compensator (SVC) at 3Φ, 50Hz, 11kV/440V, DY-11, 500 kVA distribution transformer. The SVC consisting of thyristor switched capacitor bank in binary sequential steps in conjunction with smallest step size thyristor controlled reactor. This compensation technique facilitates control on the reactive power depending on load requirement so as maintain power factor near unity always, which results in efficient electrical power system.
