Bicycle riders are among the highest risk group in traffic. A cyclist simulation study captured kinematics and injuries to legs, pelvis, neck, and head for one human body size. We analyzed the number of parameters (forces acting on left and right tibia, head injury criterion, neck tensile force, neck shear force, and pelvic acceleration) for each of the four different cases: bicyclist ride out—residential driveway, motorist overtaking—undetected bicyclist, bicyclist left turn—same direction, and bicyclist right turn—opposite direction. The comparison of simulation outcomes for leg injuries with official hospital records has shown a very good correlation in terms of injury severity prediction. This study concludes that if countermeasures to prevent fatal cyclist injury in car impacts were to be concentrated on mitigating head and neck impact to the windscreen of the car, a dominant share of fatal cyclist crashes and severe traumatic head injury cases at collision speeds exceeding 40 km/h could be prevented.

Assessment of bicycle–car accidents under four different types of collision

The goal of the project FIMCAR (Frontal Impact and Compatibility Assessment Research) was to define an integrated set of test procedures and associated metrics to assess a vehicle's frontal impact protection, which includes self- and partner-protection. For the development of the set, two different full-width tests (full-width deformable barrier [FWDB] test, full-width rigid barrier test) and three different offset tests (offset deformable barrier [ODB] test, progressive deformable barrier [PDB] test, moveable deformable barrier with the PDB barrier face [MPDB] test) have been investigated. Different compatibility assessment procedures were analysed and metrics for assessing structural interaction (structural alignment, vertical and horizontal load spreading) as well as several promising metrics for the PDB/MPDB barrier were developed. The final assessment approach consists of a combination of the most suitable full-width and offset tests. For the full-width test (FWDB), a metric was developed to address structural alignment based on load cell wall information in the first 40 ms of the test. For the offset test (ODB), the existing ECE R94 was chosen. Within the paper, an overview of the final assessment approach for the frontal impact test procedures and their development is given.

Development of Compatibility Assessments for Full Width and Offset Frontal Impact Test Procedures in FIMCAR

Veranlasst durch neue Europaeische Normen fuer Fahrzeugrueckhaltesysteme (passive Schutzeinrichtungen), wurden die nach den RPS 89 gebraeuchlichen Schutzeinrichtungen in Anprallversuchen untersucht. Ziel war es zu klaeren, ob diese Systeme nach den Anforderungen der Europaeischen Norm DIN EN 1317-1, 2 geeignet sind und damit auch kuenftig an deutschen Strassen eingesetzt werden koennen. Untersucht wurden die Stahlschutzsysteme ESP, EDSP und DDSP in den Ausfuehrungen, wie diese fuer den Einsatz in unbefestigtem Gelaende, auf Bauwerken und in Mittelstreifenueberfahrten vorgesehen sind, sowie Ortbetonschutzwaende im "New-Jersey"-Profil. Dazu wurden insgesamt 26 Anprallversuche nach den Vorgaben der Europaeischen Norm DIN EN 1317-1 durchgefuehrt. Als Ergebnis ist festzuhalten, dass die Stahlschutzsysteme ESP 4,0 und ESP 2,0 sowie EDSP 2,0 und EDSP 1,33 die erwartete Leistungsfaehigkeit der Aufhaltestufen N2 beziehungsweise H1 besitzen. Das Stahlschutzsystem DDSP 2,0 erfuellt die Anforderungen der Aufhaltestufe H2 knapp. Nicht bestanden wurde der energetisch niedriger liegende Versuch TB42 der Aufhaltestufe H1. Das Stahlschutzsystem DDSP 4,0 erfuellt auf Grund des nicht ausreichenden Aufhaltevermoegens beziehungsweise geloester Pfosten weder gerammt noch in Rohrhuelsen (fuer Mittelstreifenueberfahrten) und auf Bauwerken die Aufhaltestufe H1. Erst die Nachruestung des gerammten Systems mit einem zusaetzlichen Distanzstueck konnte in zwei weiteren Versuchen die Qualifizierung der DDSP 4,0+ sicher stellen. Die Betonschutzwand (hergestellt im Gleitschalungsverfahren) im "New-Jersey"-Profil mit einer Hoehe von 0,81 m erfuellt die Aufhaltestufe H2, kann auf Grund der nicht nachgewiesenen Anprallheftigkeitsstufe nur "an besonders gefaehrlichen Stellen, an denen das Aufhalten eines von der Fahrbahn abkommenden Fahrzeugs ... von vorrangiger Bedeutung ist" eingesetzt werden. Die Betonschutzwand mit einer Hoehe von 1,15 m konnte die Aufhaltestufe H4b auf Grund des nicht ausreichenden Aufhaltevermoegens nicht erfuellen. Damit erfuellt die Mehrzahl der untersuchten Systeme die Anforderungen der DIN EN 1317-2, sie koennen deshalb grundsaetzlich weiterhin in Deutschland verwendet werden. Weitere Untersuchungen sollten daran anschliessen und sich auf die Untersuchung von Anfangs- und Endkonstruktionen von Stahl- und Betonschutzeinrichtungen sowie von Uebergaengen zwischen verschiedenartigen Systemen und spezielle Einsatzfaelle, wie zum Beispiel Bruecken ueber bebautem Gebiet, konzentrieren. Eignung von Fahrzeug-Rueckhaltesystemen gemaess den Anforderungen nach DIN EN 1317

The objective was to develop and validate a crash trolley (reference vehicle) equipped with a compartment and a full restraint system for driver and front seat passenger which can be used in full scale crash testing. Furthermore, the crash trolley should have a suspension to show rotation and nick effects similar to real vehicles. Within the development phase the reference vehicle was build based on a European family car. Special attention was needed to provide appropriate strength to the trolley and its suspension. The reference vehicle is equipped with a restraint system consisting of airbags, pedals, seats, dashboard, and windscreen. On the front of the vehicle different crash barriers can be installed to provide miscellaneous deceleration pulses. For the validation phase a series of low and high speed crash tests with HIII dummies were conducted and compared with full scale tests. For the comparison deceleration pulse, dummy numbers and vehicle movement were analyzed. Validation tests with velocities up to 60 km/h showed promising results. The compartment and the suspension systems stayed stable. Rotation effects were comparable with full scale car crash tests. The airbags and seat belt system worked reasonable. The acceleration pulse compared to an European New Car Assessment Programme (EuroNCAP) test had a similar characteristic but was in general slightly lower. After the successful validation the reference vehicle is already in use in different studies in the field of vehicle safety research at BASt.
