Dietary supplementation of fish protein hydrolysate in high plant protein diets modulates growth, liver and kidney health, and immunity of barramundi (Lates calcarifer)

The effects of tuna viscera hydrolysate (TVH) on juvenile pompano Trachinotus blochii, growth performance, nutritional response, intestinal and liver health, and resistance to Streptococcus iniae were investigated in this study. Five isonitrogenous and isocaloric diets (protein 46.0%, lipid 10.0%) were formulated in which TVH was added to replace fishmeal protein at levels of 0 (control), 30, 60, 90, and 120 g kg-1, labelled as TVH0, TVH05, TVH10, TVH15, and TVH20, respectively. Triplicate groups of pompano were fed the respective diets for ten weeks. The results showed that fish fed diets containing TVH10 produced significantly higher final body weight and specific growth rate in comparison to the fishmeal control (

 ). Dietary TVH did not produce any effect on feed utilisation, somatic indices, and proximate composition of juvenile pompano (

 ). While most amino acids were unchanged by the dietary inclusion of TVH, phenylalanine and valine levels were significantly lower in the fish fed TVH20 diet compared to the control. Fish fed the TVH20 diet had significantly lowered total serum protein compared to the TVH10 treatment, whereas other biochemical parameters in the blood did not show any difference among treatments. The intestinal histology indicated a significant increase in goblet cell numbers in fish fed TVH10 diet. Fish fed diet supplemented with TVH showed the highest disease resistance against Streptococcus iniae after 14 days of challenge. Based on a quadratic regression between final body weight and dietary TVH levels, the optimum TVH was calculated to be 10% or 60.0 g kg-1 for maximum growth performance when fed to pompano.

Effects of Dietary Tuna Viscera Hydrolysate Supplementation on Growth, Intestinal Mucosal Response, and Resistance to Streptococcus iniae Infection in Pompano (Trachinotus blochii)

The future growth and sustainability of fed aquaculture, and especially that for carnivorous species, will be highly dependent upon the industry stepping away from its reliance upon forage fishes as major feed ingredients. With this goal in mind, the F3 Feed Innovation Network—a consortium of researchers; businesses, including feed manufacturers and ingredient providers; NGOs; and others—energizes industry to adopt novel and promising aquafeed ingredients and formulations. All evaluated formulae are open-source and freely available on the F3 website. Moreover, the F3 diets can be readily retailored to suit user demands and/or local conditions (i.e., ingredient availability/restrictions). This presentation summarizes completed F3 trials undertaken with five species of cultured and candidate fishes. With reference to eight studies, findings are compared against conventional fishmeal (FM)/fish oil (FO)-based feeds. The described research documents the response of test animals to aquafeeds containing traditional FM/FO alternatives (e.g., soybean meal and poultry by-product meal) as well as innovative ingredients (e.g., microalgae and single-cell proteins). Depending on the species examined, account is given to the overall growth performance, health aspects, and product quality. The F3 trials demonstrate the feasibility of the complete removal of FM/FO from the diets of the tested animals.

In Pursuit of Fish-Free Feeds: A Multi-Species Evaluation

Florida pompanos (15.3 g initial average weight) were fed one of seven open-source experimental diets to examine the effects of the complete removal of fishmeal (FM) and fish oil (FO) upon growth over a 12-week period. Diets were compared against an investigational feed containing FM and FO. Three different oils, derived from flax, canola and an alga, alone or in combination, were evaluated as alternatives for FO. FM was replaced in the experimental diets using a blend of proteins that included poultry by-product meal, hydrolysed soy and soy and corn protein concentrates. The study was undertaken in a recirculating aquaculture system and under hyposaline (3 g/L) conditions with each diet being examined in triplicate. At trial end, fish fed some diets increased their initial body weight by over 300%, and there were no differences (p > 0.05) between diets for feed efficiency, condition or K-factor, whole-body composition, intraperitoneal fat (%), hepatosomatic index or fillet yield (%). All experimental diets achieved parity with the FM/FO control feed. Differences were detected in fillet fatty acids among diets, with the latter corresponding to dietary profiles. This study represents the first with pompano to evaluate diets simultaneously void of FM and FO and provides strong evidence to support the practicability of removing FM/FO from pompano diets.
