We propose new systems for certificate revocation that are more economical and efficient than traditional ones. We also point out what we believe to be a structural problem in traditional public-key infrastructures, and various ways to solve it.

Efficient Certificate Revocation

A method of managing certificates in a communication system having a certifying authority and a directory. Preferably, the method begins by having the certifying authority generate certificates by digitally signing a given piece of data. At a later point time, the certifying authority may produce a string that proves whether a particular certificate is currently valid without also proving the validity of at least some other certificates. The technique obviates use of certification revocation lists communicated between the certifying authority and the directory.

Systems and methods are configured to manage data sets associated with a transaction device. For example, a method is provided for facilitating the management of distinct data sets on a transaction device that are provided by distinct data set owners, wherein the distinct data sets may include differing formats. The method includes the steps of: adding, by a read/write, a first data set to the financial transaction device, wherein the first data set is owned by a first owner; adding, by the read/write device, a second data set to the financial transaction device, wherein the second data set is owned by a second owner; and storing the first data set and the second data set on the financial transaction device in accordance with an owner defined format. The first and second data sets are associated with first and second owners, respectively, and are configured to be stored independent of each other The transaction device user may be permitted to select at least one of the multiple data sets for transaction completion using a secondary identifier indicia. Where the user selects multiple accounts for transaction completion, the user may be permitted to allocate portions of a transaction to the selected transaction accounts. The transaction request may be processed in accordance with the user's allocations.

A system and method are disclosed for controlling physical access through a digital certificate validation process that works with standard certificate formats and that enables a certifying authority (CA) to prove the validity status of each certificate C at any time interval (e.g., every day, hour, or minute) starting with C's issue date, D 1 . C's time granularity may be specified within the certificate itself, unless it is the same for all certificates. For example, all certificates may have a one-day granularity with each certificate expires 365 days after issuance. Given certain initial inputs provided by the CA, a one-way hash function is utilized to compute values of a specified byte size that are included on the digital certificate and to compute other values that are kept secret and used in the validation process.

wird mittels Mehrfrequenz-Verfahren (DTMF) durchgefuhrt.
Das personliche Geheimnis bzw. der geheime Schlussel, der
fur den Authentifikationsalgorithmus verwendet wird, ist in
einem intern oder extern angeordneten Sicherheitsmodul
abgespeichert. Die Vorrichtung zur Durchfuhrung des
Verfahrens kann zum Beispiel in Form einer Chipkarte, einer
Armbanduhr oder eines sehr kleinen Taschenrechners
ausgefuhrt sein. Sie besteht aus einer Tastatur (1), einer
Anzeige (2), einem Funkrufempfanger (3) mit Antenne (8),
einem DTMF-Signalgeber (4) mit Tongeber (9), einer
Sicherheitslogik (5), einem Rufnummernspeicher (6) und
einem Prozessor (7) zur Steuerung dieser genannten
Komponenten.

Es wird ein Verfahren und eine Vorrichtung zum universellen und gesicherten Zugang zum Telefonnetz und zu angebotenen Multimedia- und Operatordiensten angegeben, das zum Homebanking, zum Laden von elektronischen Geldborsen, zu Operatordiensten oder fur Notfalldienste fur medizinische Zwecke mittels Chipkarten dient. Die Vorrichtung bzw. das Multimediagerat (29) besteht im wesentlichen aus einer sehr kleinen mobilen und tragbaren Einheit, die mit einer Tastatur (31), mit einem Display (36), mit einem klappbaren Teil (34) mit integriertem Mikrofon (35) und mit einem MFV-Sender (7) sowie einer Einschubvorrichtung (37) fur mobile Datentrager (1) ausgerustet ist. Sowohl der mobile Datentrager als auch das Multimediagerat (29) besitzen eigene Speicher (4 bzw. 10) als auch eine eigene Steuereinheit (3 bzw. 8) sowie jeweils eine Einheit bzw. Einrichtung (2 bzw. 6) zum Datenaustausch. Der mobile Datentrager (1) verfugt auch uber eine eigene kryptografische Verschlusselungseinheit (5). Damit konnen von der Eingabetastatur (31) Ziffern eingegeben werden, die an einen eingesteckten mobilen Datentrager (1) ubertragen werden. Dieser steckbare, mobile Datentrager (1), wie zum Beispiel eine Chipkarte oder eine Plug-In-Chipkarte ist nun in der Lage, die uber die Tastatur (31) eingegebenen Daten zu verschlusseln. Nach der Verschlusselung erfolgt die Ruckgabe der Daten an das Multimediagerat (29). Unmittelbar danach werden die Daten uber einen integrierten MFV-Sender (7) an das Mikrofon eines Telefonhorers (32) ubertragen. Der Operatordienst (20) meldet sich mit einem entsprechenden Kennungston, der vom Mikrofon (35) empfangen und vom Multimediagerat (29) ausgewertet wird. Unmittelbar danach fordert der Zentralrechner (21) des Operatordienstes (20) dazu auf, sich gegenuber dem Dienst zu identifizieren. Das Multimediagerat (29) ist nun in der Lage, nach einer fest eingestellten Zeit nach dem Empfang des Kennungstons entweder automatisch die Identifikationsinformationen uber den MFV-Sender (7) auszusenden oder die Identifikationsinformation wird uber die Tastatur (31) eingegeben und ausgesendet. Aufgrund der beim Zentralrechner (21) empfangenen Identifikationsinformation erfolgt ein Abgleich mit der Datenbank, die nun den entsprechenden Dienstnutzer zuordnen kann. Danach wird eine sogenannte Authentifikation durchgefuhrt und zwar sendet hierzu der Operatordienst (20) eine Zufallszahl an das Multimediagerat (29), die zum mobilen Datentrager (1) ubertragen wird. Der mobile Datentrager ist aufgrund eines geheimen Schlussels in der Lage, die Zufallszahl zu verschlusseln. Diese verschlusselte Zufallszahl wird dann an das Multimediagerat (29) zur Aussendung ubergeben. Die Datenbank (23) vergleicht die empfangene verschlusselte Zufallszahl mit dem in der Datenbank gespeicherten Istwert bzw. mit einem Wert, der von der Kryptoeinheit 30 berechnet wird. Danach wird der Benutzer aufgefordert, die Zielrufnummer des gewunschten Teilnehmers einzugeben. Ist die gewunschte Rufnummer vorhanden und im Netz nicht besetzt, so verbindet die Vermittlungseinrichtung (22) mit dem gewunschten Teilnehmer.
