Broadband wireless access systems deployed in residential and business environments are likely to face hostile radio propagation environments, with multipath delay spread extending over tens or hundreds of bit intervals. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplex (OFDM) is a recognized multicarrier solution to combat the effects of such multipath conditions. This article surveys frequency domain equalization (FDE) applied to single-carrier (SC) modulation solutions. SC radio modems with frequency domain equalization have similar performance, efficiency, and low signal processing complexity advantages as OFDM, and in addition are less sensitive than OFDM to RF impairments such as power amplifier nonlinearities. We discuss similarities and differences of SC and OFDM systems and coexistence possibilities, and present examples of SC-FDE performance capabilities.

Frequency domain equalization for single-carrier broadband wireless systems

In order to estimate the signal parameters accurately for mobile systems, it is necessary to estimate a system's propagation characteristics through a medium. Propagation analysis provides a good initial estimate of the signal characteristics. The ability to accurately predict radio-propagation behavior for wireless personal communication systems, such as cellular mobile radio, is becoming crucial to system design. Since site measurements are costly, propagation models have been developed as a suitable, low-cost, and convenient alternative. Channel modeling is required to predict path, loss and to characterize the impulse response of the propagating channel. The path loss is associated with the design of base stations, as this tells us how much a transmitter needs to radiate to service a given region. Channel characterization, on the other hand, deals with the fidelity of the received signals, and has to do with the nature of the waveform received at a receiver. The objective here is to design a suitable receiver that will receive the transmitted signal, distorted due to the multipath and dispersion effects of the channel, and that will decode the transmitted signal. An understanding of the various propagation models can actually address both problems. This paper begins with a review of the information available on the various propagation models for both indoor and outdoor environments. The existing models can be classified into two major classes: statistical models and site-specific models. The main characteristics of the radio channel - such as path loss, fading, and time-delay spread - are discussed. Currently, a third alternative, which includes many new numerical methods, is being introduced to propagation prediction. The advantages and disadvantages of some of these methods are summarized. In addition, an impulse-response characterization for the propagation path is also presented, including models for small-scale fading, Finally, it is shown that when two-way communication ports can be defined for a mobile system, it is possible to use reciprocity to focus the energy along the direction of an intended user without any explicit knowledge of the electromagnetic environment in which the system is operating, or knowledge of the spatial locations of the transmitter and the receiver.

A survey of various propagation models for mobile communication

The reliable prediction of coverage footprint resulting from an airborne wireless radio base station, is at utmost importance, when it comes to the new emerging applications of air-to-ground wireless services. These applications include the rapid recovery of damaged terrestrial wireless infrastructure due to a natural disaster, as well as the fulfillment of sudden wireless traffic overload in certain spots due to massive movement of crowds. In this paper, we propose a statistical propagation model for predicting the air-to-ground path loss between a low altitude platform and a terrestrial terminal. The prediction is based on the urban environment properties, and is dependent on the elevation angle between the terminal and the platform. The model shows that air-to-ground path loss is following two main propagation groups, characterized by two different path loss profiles. In this paper we illustrate the methodology of which the model was deduced, as well as we present the different path loss profiles including the occurrence probability of each.

OFDM for Wireless Communications Systems

A comprehensive review of the propagation prediction models for terrestrial wireless communication systems is presented in this paper. The classic empirical models are briefly described and the focus is placed on the application of ray-tracing techniques to the development of deterministic propagation models. Schemes to increase the computational efficiency and accuracy are discussed. Traditional statistical models are also briefly reviewed for completeness. New challenges to the propagation prediction are described and some new approaches for meeting these challenges are presented.

Propagation prediction models for wireless communication systems

Engineers designing and installing outdoor and indoor wireless communications systems need effective and practical tools to help them determine base station antenna locations for adequate signal coverage. Computer-based radio propagation prediction tools are now often used in designing these systems. We assess the performance of such a propagation tool based on ray-tracing and advanced computational methods. We have compared its predictions with outdoor experimental data collected in Manhattan and Boston (at 900 MHz and 2 GHz). The comparisons show that the computer-based propagation tool can predict signal strengths in these environments with very good accuracy. The prediction errors are within 6 dB in both mean and standard deviation. This shows that simulations, rather than costly field measurements, can lead to accurate determination of the coverage area for a given system design.

Comparisons of a computer-based propagation prediction tool with experimental data collected in urban microcellular environments

This paper deals with the measurement and modeling of multipath delay on fixed wireless paths at 1.9 GHz in suburban environments. The primary focus is on the delay profile, which is the normalized plot of received power versus delay in response to an RT "impulse." We describe measurement campaigns in the western suburbs of Chicago, IL, and in suburban north-central New Jersey. Our analysis of the data suggests to us that, for directive terminal antennas, the delay profile can be modeled as having a "spike-plus-exponential" shape, i.e., a strong return ("spike") at the lowest delay, plus a set of returns whose mean powers decay exponentially with delay. This delay profile can be characterized by just two parameters (both variable over the terrain), namely, the ratio (K/sub 0/) of the average powers in the "spike" and "exponential" components and the decay time constant (/spl tau//sub 0/) of the "exponential" component. No such simple structure appears to apply for delay profiles using omnidirectional antennas. For a directive antenna with a 32/spl deg/ beamwidth, we find that: (1) the statistical correlation between the profile parameters K/sub 0/ and /spl tau//sub 0/ is negligible; (2) these parameters are relatively insensitive to antenna height and path length; and (3) over each measured region (Illinois and New Jersey), K/sub 0/ and /spl tau//sub 0/ have median values close to 8 dB and just below 0.2 /spl mu/s, respectively. Moreover, we have found simple probability distributions that accurately portray the variability of K/sub 0/ and /spl tau//sub 0/ over the terrain.

A model for the multipath delay profile of fixed wireless channels

A complete first-order statistical characterization of two-branch diversity reception over narrowband fixed wireless channels can be given in terms of just five channel parameters: the average path gains and Ricean K-factors for each branch and the complex envelope correlation coefficient between the time-varying parts of the two path gains. Propagation measurements collected in typical suburban environments have shown that each of these parameters, or its logarithm, is close to Gaussian. Accordingly, the set may be cast as a five-element vector of jointly random Gaussian processes which are completely specified by the means, standard variations, and mutual correlation coefficients of the five parameters.
