Residual stress measurements by means of neutron diffraction

TL;DR: In this article, a new method for the analysis of multiaxial residual stress states is presented, which is based on high resolution neutron diffraction, analogous to X-ray stress analysis, but the use of neutrons instead of X-rays allows to analyse the stress distributions also in the interior of technical components in a non-destructive way.

Determination of Residual Stress Distributions in the Interior of Technical Parts by Means of Neutron Diffraction

TL;DR: Neutron sources are used for stress analysis as mentioned in this paper, but neutrons have not yet been used in stress analysis because of the following drawbacks: In respect to brightness neutron sources are highly inferior to X-ray sources so that even at a modern high- flux reactor the intensity of monochromatic neutron beams is much lower than that of an Xray beam produced by a common Xray tube.
