High-velocity impact welding is a kind of solid-state welding process that is one of the solutions for the joining of dissimilar materials that avoids intermetallics. Five main methods have been developed to date. These are gas gun welding (GGW), explosive welding (EXW), magnetic pulse welding (MPW), vaporizing foil actuator welding (VFAW), and laser impact welding (LIW). They all share a similar welding mechanism, but they also have different energy sources and different applications. This review mainly focuses on research related to the experimental setups of various welding methods, jet phenomenon, welding interface characteristics, and welding parameters. The introduction states the importance of high-velocity impact welding in the joining of dissimilar materials. The review of experimental setups provides the current situation and limitations of various welding processes. Jet phenomenon, welding interface characteristics, and welding parameters are all related to the welding mechanism. The conclusion and future work are summarized.

High-Velocity Impact Welding Process: A Review

Numerical simulations of high-velocity impact welding are extremely challenging due to the coupled physics and highly dynamic nature of the process. Thus, conventional mesh-based numerical methodologies are not able to accurately model the process owing to the excessive mesh distortion close to the interface of two welded materials. A simulation platform was developed using smoothed particle hydrodynamics, implemented in a parallel architecture on a supercomputer. Then, the numerical simulations were compared to experimental tests conducted by vaporizing foil actuator welding. The close correspondence of the experiment and modeling in terms of interface characteristics allows the prediction of local temperature and strain distributions, which are not easily measured.

A character is t ic feature of joints obtained by explosive welding is the rather s t r ict regularity and periodicity of the residual deformation in the impact region, which gives the contact surfaces a wavy shape (Fig. i). served that the waves formed when metal plates collide promote the formation of a strong joint [2, 3]. The positive effect of wave formation in connection with explosive welding is evidently attributable to the following principal factors. 1. During wave formation most of the initial kinetic energy of the projected plate is converted not into compressive energy, but into energy of plastic wave flow, with subsequent conversion into heat. This prevents the development of tensile s t resses during unloading, which might destroy the joint, and the metal in the joint zone is strongly heated, which in most cases favors the formation of a strong bond. 2. Wave formation is accompanied by the formation of a zone of interpenetration of the surface layers of the metals, in which both welded components are simultaneously present. The existence of this zone is attributable to purely mechanical processes associated with wave formation.
