Since it was invented in 1986, elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) has been studied widely in industry and academy from different perspectives. Some of these aspects include mathematical foundations, protocol design, curve generation, security proofs, point representation, algorithms for inherent arithmetic in the underlying algebraic structures, implementation strategies in both software and hardware, and attack models, among others. The main advantage of ECC is that shorter keys (less-memory requirements and faster field arithmetic operations) can be used if compared with other cryptosystems, which has made it the ideal choice for implementing public key cryptography in resource constrained devices, as the ones found in the envisioned applications of the Internet of Things, e.g., wireless sensors. In this application domain, lightweight cryptography has emerged as the required one because of the scarce computing resources and limited energy in devices. In this paper, we present a survey of ECC in the context of lightweight cryptography. The aim of this paper is to identify the criteria that make an ECC-based system lightweight and a viable solution for using in practical constrained applications. Representative works are systematically revised to determine the key aspects considered in ECC designs for lightweight realizations. As a result, this paper defines, for the first time, the concept and requirements for elliptic curve lightweight cryptography.

Elliptic Curve Lightweight Cryptography: A Survey

The goal of Internet-of-Things (IoT) is that every object across the globe be interconnected under the Internet Infrastructure. IoT is expanding its application domain to range from environmental monitoring to industrial automation thereby leading to vast research challenges. Vast presence of devices in the Internet has increased the possible challenges faced by devices and data. The devices communicate on a public channel that is more likely to be accessed by unauthorized users and disturb the privacy of genuine users. The existing solutions that ensure data authenticity and user privacy, use MD5 and SHA-family of hashing algorithms under digital signature schemes. These algorithms create a trade-off between the security concern and energy consumption of IoT devices. To provide an energy efficient authentication method, we propose a customized BLAKE2b hashing algorithm with modified elliptic curve digital signature scheme (ECDSA). The parameters considered for the evaluation of the proposed methods are signature generation time, signature verification time and hashing time. The experiments are conducted under client server model using Raspberry Pi-3. The proposed method has shown about 0.7–1.91% improvement in the signature generation time and 7.67–9.13 % improvement in signature verification time when compared with BLAKE2b based signature generation/verification. The proposed method is resistant to Man-in-the-Middle attack, Distributed DoS attack (DDoS), pre-image resistance, second pre-image resistance and collision resistance. Based on the performance obtained by the experiments, it can be inferred that the proposed scheme is feasible for resource-constrained IoT devices.

Light-weight hashing method for user authentication in Internet-of-Things

The essential security mechanism in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is authentication, where nodes can authenticate each other before transmitting a valid data to a sink. There are a number of public key authentication procedures available for WSN in recent years. Due to constraints in WSN environment there is a need for light-weight authentication procedure that consumes less power during computation. This proposed work aims at developing a light-weight authentication protocol using MBLAKE2b with elliptic curve digital signature algorithm (ECDSA). The proposed protocol is also tested using the protocol verification tool Scyther and found to be secure in all claims and roles. This proposed algorithm increases the network life time and reduces the computation time, which is essential for the constrained environment like WSNs.

Hybrid local prediction error-based difference expansion reversible watermarking for medical images

Reversible Watermarking is the technique of embedding secret messages into a cover image and recovering both the embedded secret message and the cover image without any distortion. One of the high quality and popular reversible data hiding methods is Difference Expansion method. In this paper, Difference Pair Mapping (DPM) method is used to embed the message into the cover image. The DPM method is based on predicting the pixel values and hiding the secret data with arbitrary threshold. The simulation results show that the hiding capacity is increased in DPM method when compared to other Difference Expansion techniques. Further, in order to provide security, DNA based encryption algorithm is used to resist the statistical and exhaustive attacks 2382 C. Vinoth Kumar, V. Natarajan and P. Poonguzhali over the image. The combined difference expansion and encryption algorithm provides high embedding capacity along with high security.

Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) is a public key cryptographic technique. Here the encryption and decryption are done in finite field either in prime mode or in binary mode. Goal of this work is to design a light weight and fast message authentication algorithm. The Digital signature Algorithm used in ECC i.e. Elliptic curve digital signature algorithm (ECDSA) uses SHA-1 as the algorithm for generating the hash code. In this paper we propose a technique of using Sponge hash for generating the hash code and signing the message with the newly generated hash code. This approach reduces the bytes per cycle time of the algorithm used in generating the hash code for authentication. when the bytes/cycle time is reduced then the energy consumption will also be reduced and the computation time is also reduced when used in resource constrained environments. abstract environment.
