Persulfate is the newest oxidant that is being used for in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) in the remediation of soil and groundwater. In this review, the fundamental reactions and governing factors of persulfate relevant to ISCO are discussed. The latest experiences for ISCO with persulfate are presented, with a focus on the different activation methods, the amenable contaminants, and the reactions of persulfate with porous media, based primarily on a critical review of the peer-reviewed scientific literature and to a lesser extent on non-reviewed professional journals and conference proceedings. The last sections are devoted to identifying the best practices based on current experience and suggesting the direction of future research.

Published data on photochemical reactions of f-element compounds, namely, uranyl ion and lanthanide and actinide ions, are surveyed and analyzed. The types of reactions of photoexcited ions, reaction mechanisms, and analytical applications of the photochemical methods for the separation, isolation, and determination of f-elements are considered.

Photochemistry of f-element ions

The data on radiolytic transformations of ions of uranium, neptunium, plutonium, americium, curium and transcurium elements in aqueous solutions are generalised. The results of studies on the kinetics of fast reactions of these ions with primary products of water radiolysis (hydrated electron e-aq, H, OH, and O- radicals and H2O2), many inorganic (Cl2-, NO3, SO4-, CO3-, O3- etc.) and organic free radicals are analysed. The mechanism of γ- and α-radiolysis of solutions of actinide ions is discussed. The bibliography includes 183 references.

Alkaline chemistry of transuranium elements and technetium and the treatment of alkaline radioactive wastes

A Mössbauer effect method was used to study the formation of mixed hydroxides in the alkaline coprecipitation of Pu(IV) or Np(IV) with Fe(III). The Mössbauer spectra of mixed 239Pu(IV)-Fe(III) and 237Np(IV)-Fe(III) hydroxide samples differ from that of pure α-FeO(OH) formed in aqueous basic solutions. Alkaline coprecipitation of Np(V) or Np(VI) with Fe(III) hydroxides does not produce the mixed hydroxides shown by Pu(IV) or Np(IV) with Fe(III). The general Mössbauer spectral parameters of the Np(V),(VI)-Fe(III) hydroxides are similar to those of pure α-FeO(OH).
