The T-matrix method is among the most versatile, efficient, and widely used theoretical techniques for the numerically exact computation of electromagnetic scattering by homogeneous and composite particles, clusters of particles, discrete random media, and particles in the vicinity of an interface separating two half-spaces with different refractive indices. This paper presents an update to the comprehensive database of T-matrix publications compiled by us previously and includes the publications that appeared since 2007. It also lists several earlier publications not included in the original database.

Controllable coherent perfect absorption in a composite film

During the year 2008, we have been commemorating, in several places, the hundredth anniversary of the famous 1908-paper by Mie describing the interaction between an electromagnetic plane wave and a homogeneous sphere defined by its diameter d and its complex refractive index m . Due to the existence of a prior version by Lorenz, Mie's theory may also be named as Lorenz–Mie theory (LMT). The generalized Lorenz–Mie theory (GLMT) stricto sensu deals with the more general case when the illuminating wave is an arbitrary shaped beam (say: a laser beam) still interacting with a homogeneous sphere defined by its diameter d and its complex refractive index m . The name “GLMTs” is generically used to designate various variants for other particle shapes when the method of separation of variables is used. The present paper provides a review of the work accomplished in this generalized field during the last decade (the third decade). As a convenient selection criterion, only papers citing the work of the group of Rouen have been essentially used, with ISIweb of knowledge providing a database.

Generalized Lorenz-Mie theories, the third decade: A perspective

We report an experimental observation of slow light propagation in cold Rb atoms exhibiting cavity electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The steep slope of the atomic dispersion manifested by EIT reduces the light group velocity. The cavity filtering and feedback further contribute to the slowdown and delay of the light pulse propagation. A combination of the cavity and the EIT atomic system significantly improves the performance of the slow light propagation. A propagation time delay of ~200 ns was observed in the cavity and Rb EIT system, which is ~70 times greater than the time delay calculated for the light pulse propagation through the same Rb EIT system without the cavity.

Slow light with cavity electromagnetically induced transparency

We consider pulse propagation through a two component composite medium (metal inclusions in a dielectric host) with or without cavity mirrors. We show that a very thin slab of such a medium, under conditions of localized plasmon resonance, can lead to significant superluminality with detectable levels of the transmitted pulse. A cavity containing the heterogeneous medium is shown to lead to subluminal-to-superluminal transmission depending on the volume fraction of the metal inclusions. The predictions of the phase time calculations are verified by explicit calculations of the transmitted pulse shapes. We also demonstrate the independence of phase time on system width and the volume fraction under specific conditions.

Control of superluminal transit through a heterogeneous medium

Pulse propagation through 1-dimensional stratified media is studied. The general features of pulse propagation in relation to the delay or advancement of the pulse are discussed. It is shown that in a lossless system with spatial symmetry the reflected and the transmitted pulses have the same delay or advancement. The phase times and the explicit output pulse profiles for an input Gaussian pulse are calculated. While recalling recent results for a variety of systems (resonant absorbers or heterogeneous medium in a Fabry-Perot cavity, a slab of negative index medium, a left-handed/right-handed periodic structure, etc.), new results involving coupled waveguides and a high finesse cavity containing an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) medium are presented. Calculations clearly show that for pulses with a carrier tuned at the resonance of the stratified media, one generally has subluminal propagation. Alternatively, in stop gaps or away from the resonances one ends up with superluminal transit. In the case of the EIT cavity it is shown that the large dispersion offered by the intracavity medium can lead to substantial superluminality (n g ≃-10 6 ) with peak transmission as high as 20%. This is in sharp contrast to large signal attenuation for usual superluminal transit. Note also that EIT, to the best of the authors knowledge, has so far been used to achieve only slow light.

Sub and superluminal propagation through stratified media

We study the effect of a nearby phase-conjugate mirror (PCM) on the gap soliton of a Kerr non-linear periodic structure. We show that phase conjugation of the gap soliton (in the sense of replication of the amplitude profile in the reverse direction) is possible under the condition of PCM reflectivity approaching unity. This is in contrast with the results for linear structures, where the wave profiles can be conjugated for arbitrary values of the PCM reflectivity. The sensitivity of the conjugation of the gap solitons to PCM reflectivity is ascribed to the fine balance of non-linearity with dispersion, necessary for their existence.
