This chapter reviews different suggestions for applications of PRCs. Due to the high sensitivity, high diffraction efficiency, reversibility, and the ease of handling, these dynamic photosensitive media attracted the attention of researchers working in different areas of coherent optics. Early proposals on the use of photorefractive crystals and SLMs for holographic interferometry and 2D image processing are still interesting. Recently, a number of new ideas on PRC applications based on various phase-conjugate geometries have appeared, too.

Frequency-difference holograms in lithium niobate

We propose a very simple technique for multiplexing and interrogation of Fiber Bragg Gratings using a DFB diode
laser operating in CW mode. The technique is based on correlation detection of probe signals reflected by the fiber
Bragg gratings. Phase noise of the DFB diode laser converted into intensity noise was used as a probe signal.
Demultiplexing was performed by calculating the correlation between the probe signal and the signal reflected by the
fiber. The correlation function provide the reflectivity at the probe wavelength and position of each fiber Bragg gating.
Reflection spectra of FBGs can be obtained by tuning the diode laser wavelength with temperature and calculating the
correlation function for each probe wavelength. Results of experimental verification of the technique are presented.

Simple CW correlation OTDR for interrogation of multiplexed low-reflectivity FBG sensors

The BSO crystal must be described as an elliptical birefringent. Under the photo-induced modulation of an applied electric-field, the analysis of its polarization effect can be usefully splitted into successive operators, defined as a rotatory power followed with a linear birefringence, providing that proper values are determined for these equivalent operators, which are not identical to the intrinsic optical activity and birefringence of the crystal. A theoretical analysis of this elliptical birefringence is presented, together with experimental results. One shows that the definition of the half-wave voltage, usually considered as a characteristic, does not apply correctly to optically active crystals. Correction terms are calculated and a new method is also implemented, to determine the electro-optic coefficient. The results are given for the BSO crystal in the full visible range. These results are shown to allow a computer simulation of the performances, which enables to choose the optimal geometry of the crystal for any specific application.© (1983) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Electro-Optical Coefficient In BSO-Type Crystals With Optical Activity : Measurement And Applications

Spatial frequency mixing or combinational hologram writing by means of nonlirearity of photorefractive crystals in stationary regime of holographic writing is discussed as a new promising technique of volume holography. In particular, two important problems of Bi12Si020 crystals: nondestructive readout at the wavelength different from that of the writing beams and correlation analysis of complex 2D pictures can be solved by this method.© (1980) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Holographic Writing And Image Processing In Bi 12 SiO 20 Crystals

A new sensor is based on array of FBGs with reflectivity of 0.005%. The response time is within 3 minutes, the leak position is determined automatically with an accuracy of ± 2 meters at distance up to 10 km.
