Adopted values for the reduced electric quadrupole transition probability, B(E2)↑, from the ground state to the first-excited 2+ state of even–even nuclides are given in Table I. Values of τ, the mean life of the 2+ state; E, the energy; and β, the quadrupole deformation parameter, are also listed there. The ratio of β to the value expected from the single-particle model is presented. The intrinsic quadrupole moment, Q0, is deduced from the B(E2)↑ value. The product E×B(E2)↑ is expressed as a percentage of the energy-weighted total and isoscalar E2 sum-rule strengths.

Table II presents the data on which Table I is based, namely the experimental results for B(E2)↑ values with quoted uncertainties. Information is also given on the quantity measured and the method used. The literature has been covered to November 2000.

The adopted B(E2)↑ values are compared in Table III with the values given by systematics and by various theoretical models. Predictions of unmeasured B(E2)↑ values are also given in Table III.

The contents of this review reflect some of the shifts of emphasis that are occurring among the fields of astrophysics, nuclear physics, and elementary particle physics. Particle physics has made great advances in the unification of the fundamental forces of nature. Discussions and planning for a next big step in accelerator-colliders are presented. The technology of superconducting magnet systems as well as the fundamental physical principles of particle accelerators are discussed. Also presented are: high-resolution electronic particle detectors; nuclear physics changes such as pion interactions within nuclei; discussion of future relativistic heavy-ion colliders; the role of rotational degrees of freedom in heavy-ion collisions at low and moderate energies; hyperon beta decays; and the analysis of materials via nuclear reaction techniques. Neutrinos, their interactions and possible masses, have an important bearing on cosmology and the matter density of the universe in addition to their inherent interest in the microscopic world and this is also examined.

Recent developments in fusion and direct reactions with weakly bound nuclei

Fusion cross sections have been measured for the asymmetric system $^{16}\mathrm{O}+^{165}\mathrm{Ho}$ at energies near and deep below the Coulomb barrier with an aim to investigate the occurrence of fusion hindrance for the system. Cross sections down to $\ensuremath{\approx}700$ nb have been measured using the off-beam $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray technique. The fusion cross sections have been compared with the coupled channel calculations. The energy onset of fusion hindrance appears to occur at ${E}_{\mathrm{c}.\mathrm{m}.}=57\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.85$ MeV, where a deviation in the slope of the experimental logarithmic derivative compared to that of coupled channel calculations has been observed. This is in agreement with the value obtained from the touching point configuration of the adiabatic model.

Fusion of O 16 + Ho 165 at deep sub-barrier energies

Elastic scattering angular distribution for weakly bound nucleus 6 Li on the deformed rare earth 159 Tb target nucleus has been measured at energies around the Coulomb barrier. The elastic scattering cross sections for this reaction consist of inelastic contributions from low lying excited states of 159 Tb. The pure elastic cross-sections have been extracted from the admixture of elastic and inelastic data. The optical model potential parameters for the system have been obtained from the extracted pure elastic scattering cross sections. Coupled channel calculations have been performed with this set of potential parameters, to compare the theoretical and experimental inelastic scattering cross sections. The work has been extended to obtain the spectroscopic factor for 158 Tb+n conﬁguration from the experimental 1n-pickup data.
