The yttria-stabilized cubic zirconia (YSZ) based potentiometric sensor coupled with CdWO4 as the sensing electrode was developed for hydrogen detection. The developed CdWO4/YSZ/Pt sensor has found significant response to different concentration of hydrogen from 0.5 vol% to 3 vol% at 500 °C. The sensor showed good selectivity to several possible interferents such as CO, NO2 and C3H8 when the concentrations are less than 1500 ppm. The dc polarization curves and ac impedance spectra of the sensor were measured to study the sensing mechanism. The mixed-potential theory was confirmed to explain the sensing results. The reproducibility and signal repeatability of the sensor was examined to test the reliability of the sensor. The possible influence of oxygen variation and humidity in the background on the sensor response was also studied.

One must assume that on the surface of metals and ionic crystals there are free valencies of different types, which correspond to normal and excited valency states of the atoms of the adsorbent; different types of free valency represent active points with different activities.

The dependence of the catalytic activity on the method by which the catalyst has been prepared can be explained by the circumstance that in addition to the influence of other factors the origin of the catalyst has an effect on the interrelation of different types of free valencies on the catalyzing surface.

On the basis of the concept in regard to chemical correspondence between the reacting molecules and the catalyst and Pauling's theory of the metallic state, an explanation has been given to differences in the catalytic activity among metals of the IV period with respect to reactions which are slowed down by the chemisorption of nitrogen and reactions which involve chemisorption of hydrogen or deuterium.

In the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons and alcohols on oxide and sulfide catalysts, the hydrogen atoms of the reacting molecules are bound predominantly by oxygen and sulfur atoms of the catalyst. The difference in the mechanisms of dehydrogenation on oxides and metals is explained by the chemical difference of these classes of compound.

The higher dehydrogenation temperature on oxides in comparison with metals is explained by the high energy of formation of the free valence of oxygen.
