Consumer obfuscation by a multiproduct firm

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors show that a multi-product rm has an incentive to obfuscate its varieties to screen out its customers by their individual preferences, by manipulating the cost which consumers have to incur to search its products, and thus, the rm has incentives to raise the prices of earlier searched varieties.
Journal ArticleDOI

A Model of Directed Consumer Search

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a framework to study directed consumer search and show that when consumers observe prices before search, prices and profits are lower than when they do not, and if prices are readily observable, firms also influence search direction by their choice of price.
Journal ArticleDOI

Collusion with costly consumer search

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors use standard consumer search models to study how an increase in market transparency (lower search costs or higher share of fully informed consumers) affects cartel stability, and they find that a higher market transparency makes collusion less stable when the market is initially sufficiently transparent.
Journal ArticleDOI

A search model of costly product returns

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed a market in which consumers buy horizontally differentiated products without knowing their exact valuations and their shopping strategy is similar to the search strategy of a consumer in a sequential costly search model.
