Energy is harvesting from fluids with different densities, such as water (34) and air (38) with a rotor (12) that is selectively above and below a water surface (30). The rotor (12) has cavities (31,32) inside tubes (18) with apertures (24) in walls (22) of the tubes (18). In a submerged mode, with the rotor (12) in the water(34), air is trapped in tubes (18) on one side of the rotor (12), which has apertures (24) facing down and air is released from the tubes (18) on the opposite side of the rotor (12), which has apertures (24) facing up. The opposite happens in an elevated mode, with the rotor (12) in the air (38) above the water surface (30), in which water escapes from tubes (18) on one side of the rotor (12), with apertures (24) facing down and water is retained in tubes (18) on the opposite side of the rotor (12) with apertures (24) facing up. Mass transfer in the form of the release of water and air from the tubes (18) in the respective modes, causes imbalances in buoyancy and/or weight of the contents of the tubes (12), which causes the rotor (12) to rotate.

Energy harvesting from moving fluids using mass displacement

The present invention relates to an energy system, suitable for converting wave energy of a body of water into movement of a drive train to capture energy, said system comprising a vessel, sitting on said body of water, having a hull adapted to rotate freely through 360° in response to said wave energy. A sequence of valveless channels and interconnected reservoirs mounted within and/or on the hull adapted for water flow and positioned to convert the wave energy acting on the hull to provide a rotation of the hull, preferably continuous rotation, wherein the interconnected series of valveless reservoirs are dimensioned to ensure water can flow from each reservoir to a neighbouring reservoir via a channel in one direction only. An advantage of the invention is that the displacement of water in the vessel using the sequence of channels and reservoirs changes the centre of gravity of the vessel, such that the centre of gravity is changed in a desired direction to cause rotation of the vessel.

The invention related to wave power engineering in general and, more particularly, to apparatuses for converting energy from water surfaces waves, preferably that from sea and ocean waves, to useful mechanical energy, which can be either used directly or converted to another type of energy, for instance, to electric energy. The apparatus has a substantially horizontal axis of rotation and comprises a plurality of tanks, which are connected to each other, arranged uniformly in series in a cyclic manner, substantially symmetrically about their axis of rotation and at a some distance from the axis of rotation and form an one-piece construction, which comprises at least one full turn of tanks. Each tank is confined by a casing, which has a leading section relative to the direction of apparatus rotation, a trailing section relative to the direction of apparatus rotation, and a middle section located between said leading section and said trailing section the trailing section of each casing comprising an inlet, through which the internal cavity of the tank communicates the environment. The leading section of the tank casing is provided with a valve, which allows fluid flow in the direction from the outside inside the tank only and prevents flowing of fluid from the tank outwards. The apparatuses will rotate at any wave height, whatever a tank height is, and the parameters of plants such as the number of apparatuses, the dimensions and shape of their elements will be chosen to meet the requirements for energy efficiency of a given plant. The plant would ensure safe operation at any wave height.
