TL;DR: In this article, the reaction of primary heterocyclic amidines with benzotriazole and ethyl glyoxylate or EG equivalents afforded the corresponding α-benzotrizolyl-α-amidino esters which, upon treatment with potassium cyanide yielded the corresponding 3-amino-2-ethoxycarbonyl imidazo [1,2-a] pyridines and related compounds.
