The SIS100 synchrotron for heavy ion research is based on fast-ramped superconducting magnets. These superferric magnets are being designed, built, and tested. The first 3-m-long series dipole (maximum field of 1.9 T; ramp rate of 4 T/s) has been built. We present the test results obtained (quench training, magnetic field, ac loss, and repetition rate) and compare them with the predicted values and the required operation parameters.

Fast-Ramped Superconducting Magnets for FAIR Production Status and First Test Results

The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) is currently being constructed at GSI Darmstadt. Around 500 superconducting magnets are being procured for the heavy ion synchrotron SIS100, and around 180 are being procured for the Super Fragment Separator (Super-FRS). All these magnets have to be tested at cryogenic temperature in order to verify and guarantee their performances before they are installed in the tunnel. Test stations, measurement equipment, and the required infrastructure are being built up at the host laboratory and, due to the large number of magnets and testing requirements, at CERN and JINR. We report on the plans, testing strategy, developments, and, particularly, the status of preparations for testing of the SIS100 dipoles at GSI.

Testing of the Superconducting Magnets for the FAIR Project

The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research is now fast approaching its realization phase. Roughly 800 superconducting magnets are required for the SIS100 and the Super-FRS machines. Given their long lead time of procurement for this large number of items, the SIS100 dipoles series is already ordered with the quadrupole modules following swiftly. The Super-FRS dipole and multiplets are being tendered. In a second realization phase the SIS300 accelerator will be built and placed in the same common tunnel as the SIS100. We report the status of magnet production of the different projects together with the experiences obtained during the manufacturing process of the first SIS100 series dipole.

Status of the Superconducting Magnets for FAIR

The SIS100, a novel heavy ion synchrotron, is the main accelerator of the FAIR complex (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research), which is currently being constructed in Darmstadt, Germany. Over 400 superconducting magnets have been contracted either at industry or by collaboration partners. In order to fulfil the requirements for quality assurance, the magnets will be intensively tested at ambient and cryogenic conditions. The testing campaign considers mechanical dimension control (including the height of the yoke's gap), electrical tests, and measurements of the magnetic field induction. Two new test facilities were built for the sake of superconducting magnet testing. The first facility is located at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung GmbH, Darmstadt, Germany. The object is constructed to provide a comprehensive testing program dedicated to series dipole cryomodules. The second test facility is located at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), Dubna, Russian Federation, where quadrupole and corrector magnets are going to be tested. This paper presents the status report concerning the magnet production, testing strategy, and capability and extent of development of the test stations.

Testing of the Superconducting Magnets for the SIS100 Synchrotron

A miniaturized Printed Circuit Board (PCB) sensing coil, jointly developed by CERN and Fermilab for measuring the field of small-gap (less than 10 mm) accelerator magnets, is illustrated. A sensing coil array, with a scheme for compensating the main field when measuring the harmonic error components, hosted on a synthetic sapphire-based transducer, is presented. Key innovating features are (i) very-small size, both for the sensing coil array (thickness of 1.380 mm) and for the transducer (overall diameter of 7.350 mm), (ii) metrological performance, namely accuracy (more than five times better than state of the art), and 1-sigma repeatability (ten times better on harmonics with amplitude less than 100 ppm), and (iii) manufacturing technology of both the coil array (13 double layers aligned within 10 μm), and the sapphire support (concentricity, the most important uncertainty source for rotating coils, 3 μm of uncertainty, namely one order of magnitude better than fiberglass support). After stating the measurement problem, the design of the transducer and a case study of a two-layer PCB sensor array are illustrated. Then, the prototyping and quality control of both the sensor and the transducer are discussed. Furthermore, the calibration and the results obtained with a prototype setup at Fermilab are presented. Finally, in the appendix, the theory of the rotating coil, the sensor geometry, and the harmonic compensation are briefly reviewed for the reader easiness.

A high-precision miniaturized rotating coil transducer for magnetic measurements

Testing the different superconducting magnets for the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research requires testing capabilities beyond the necessities of dc superconducting magnets: stable power converters with fast cycles, capabilities for measuring the loss, and abilities to measure the field on the ramp for the magnets of the heavy-ion synchrotron SIS100. On the other hand, the Super Fragment Separator (Super-FRS) magnets are of large aperture and large size. The high-current design of the SIS100 main dipole and quadrupole magnets necessitated upgrading the power converter, the current leads, and different measurement systems. Facilities are being built or refurbished for measuring the SIS100 quadrupole units and the Super-FRS magnets. We describe the abilities of these facilities and the status of preparation. The upgrade of the existing facility at GSI has been completed. We present the performance of the main systems and their accuracies based on the measurements made for the SIS100 dipole.
