Profiling of oral microbiota and cytokines in COVID-19 patients
Valerio Iebba,Nunzia Zanotta,Giuseppina Campisciano,Verena Zerbato,Stefano Di Bella,Carolina Cason,Sara Morassut,Roberto Luzzati,Marco Confalonieri,Anna Teresa Palamara,Manola Comar,Manola Comar +11 more
TL;DR: A distinctive oral microbiota composition in COVID-19 subjects is evidenced, with a definite structural network in relation to secreted cytokines, trying to enlighten the intimate relationship among microbiota and SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Journal ArticleDOI
Profiling of Oral Microbiota and Cytokines in COVID-19 Patients
Valerio Iebba,Nunzia Zanotta,Giuseppina Campisciano,Verena Zerbato,Stefano Di Bella,Carolina Cason,Roberto Luzzati,Marco Confalonieri,Anna Teresa Palamara,Manola Comar,Manola Comar +10 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the oral microbiota structure and inflammatory profile of 26 naive severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients and 15 controls by 16S rRNA V2 automated targeted sequencing and magnetic bead-based multiplex immunoassays, respectively.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Model for Early COvid-19 Recognition (MECOR) Score: A Proof-of-Concept for a Simple and Low-Cost Tool to Recognize a Possible Viral Etiology in Community-Acquired Pneumonia Patients during COVID-19 Outbreak.
Gianluca Sambataro,Mauro Giuffrè,Domenico Sambataro,Andrea Palermo,Giovanna Vignigni,Roberto Cesareo,Nunzio Crimi,Sebastiano Emanuele Torrisi,Carlo Vancheri,Lorenzo Malatino,Michele Colaci,Nicoletta Del Papa,Francesca Pignataro,Erik Roman-Pognuz,Massimiliano Fabbiani,Francesca Montagnani,Chiara Cassol,Lorenzo Cavagna,Valentina Zuccaro,Verena Zerbato,Cristina Maurel,Roberto Luzzati,Stefano Di Bella +22 more
TL;DR: In conclusion, this model could provide a simple, rapid, and cheap tool for prompt COVID-19 diagnostic triage in patients with CAP and should be evaluated in further, prospective studies also involving CO VID-19 patients with negative nasopharyngeal swabs.
Journal ArticleDOI
COVID-19-Induced Thrombosis in Patients without Gastrointestinal Symptoms and Elevated Fecal Calprotectin: Hypothesis Regarding Mechanism of Intestinal Damage Associated with COVID-19
Mauro Giuffrè,Stefano Di Bella,Gianluca Sambataro,Verena Zerbato,Marco Cavallaro,Alessandro Agostino Occhipinti,Andrea Palermo,Anna Crescenti,Fabio Monica,Roberto Luzzati,Lory Saveria Crocè +10 more
TL;DR: The findings may change the current understanding of COVID-19 intestinal-related disease pathogenesis, shedding new light on the potential role of thrombosis and the consequent hypoxic intestinal damage.
Journal ArticleDOI
High fecal calprotectin levels are associated with SARS-CoV-2 intestinal shedding in COVID-19 patients: A proof-of-concept study.
Verena Zerbato,Stefano Di Bella,Mauro Giuffrè,Anna Wladyslawa Jaracz,Ylenia Gobbo,Diego Luppino,Paolo Macor,Ludovica Segat,Raffaella Koncan,Pierlanfranco D'Agaro,Michael Valentini,Lory Saveria Crocè,Maurizio Ruscio,Roberto Luzzati +13 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated if colorectal calprotectin correlates with SARS-CoV-2 intestinal shedding in COVID-19 patients with pneumonia, and found that high fecal cal-protectin levels among COVID19 patients correlate with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 detection in stools supporting the hypothesis that this virus can lead to bowel inflammation and potentially to the 'leaky gut' syndrome.
