Survey paper: Computer-Aided Inspection Planning-The state of the art

Reverse engineering (RE) has been widely applied in many segments of industry when digital or geometric models of existing physical objects are unavailable. This paper details components of RE systems and describes the needs for RE in manufacturing industries. Commonly used contact and non-contact scanning techniques are described. Possible interfaces with other manufacturing processes, especially 3D printing (3DP), are discussed. This paper also describes new trends in the field that include increased speed, accuracy, and level of automation in the future. Finally, a discussion on two major tolerance issues in terms of integrating RE and 3DP are presented.

Review of reverse engineering systems – current state of the art

Towards an intelligent approach for CMM inspection planning of prismatic parts

General metrological inspection planning is among the least explored computer-aided process planning (CAPP) domains. This paper explores certain basic issues involved in inspection planning using case-based reasoning in an environment of a Generic CAPP Support System. Firstly, algorithmic methods for characterizing and extracting inspection features are proposed and discussed. A sequential knowledge based filtering method is developed to reduce the number of inspection features typically encountered in metrological inspection planning. Finally, a formalized approach for case representation of relevant inspection domain knowledge using a newly developed parametric-list technological feature graph (PLTFG) is presented.

A customer oriented methodology for reverse engineering software selection in the computer aided inspection scenario

This paper discusses development of automatic inspection point placement and path planning methods, for use in the integration of computer-aided design with coordinate measuring machine (CMM) inspection. The proposed system demonstrates that optimal collision-free inspection paths can be efficiently generated for geometrically complex parts consisting of multiple intersecting features. This is achieved by using iterative subdivision of surfaces for point placement coupled with, efficient 3D collision avoidance and path planning. This planning module is an integral part of an overall inspection planner to fully automate rapid and reliable inspection using computer-controlled CMMs. The paper discusses the structures and algorithms used, and presents experimental results.
