Polymers containing fullerene or carbon nanotube structures

This study investigated the effects of incorporation of two different shapes functionalization fullerene C60 (FC60) and functionalization graphene (FG), into the polymer matrix on the tribological and anti-corrosion performances of epoxy coating. The structural and morphological characterization was examined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the functional groups had been grafted on the surface of C60 and G. The tribological and anti-corrosion results indicated that composite coatings showed a lower friction coefficient, wear traces area and higher anti-corrosion in comparison with neat epoxy, owing to the balance of reinforcement, lubrication and barrier properties of nanofillers and cracks generated by them, and optimal additive concentration of FC60 and FG both were 0.5 wt.%. Furthermore, this work opens up that FC60/EP coatings exhibited better tribological performance but worse corrosion resistance ability compared with FG/EP coatings due to the different shapes of nanofillers. Different tribological and anti-corrosion mechanisms were analyzed in details.

Comparative tribological and corrosion resistance properties of epoxy composite coatings reinforced with functionalized fullerene C60 and graphene

Using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, we show that composites based on polyaniline (PANI) and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are different when they are prepared by two different methods:  (1) by adding dispersed SWNTs to the polymer solutions and (2) by chemical polymerization of aniline in the presence of SWNTs. The difference originates from the irreversible chemical transformation of SWNTs in the polymerization medium. The synthesis medium used for the preparation of PANI transforms SWNTs into fragments of shorter length like closed-shell fullerenes. This explains the similarity of SERS and FTIR spectra of the composites PANI/SWNTs and PANI/C60 chemically prepared. Polyaniline and Carbon Nanotubes Based Composites Containing Whole Units and Fragments of Nanotubes

Controlling the Diameter of Polyaniline Nanofibers by Adjusting the Oxidant Redox Potential

Conducting nanotubes of polyaniline (PANI) about 80–180 nm in diameter were synthesized by a chemical template-free method in the presence of D-10-camphorsulfonic acid (D-CSA) as the dopant, and ammonium persulfate ((NH4)2S2O8) as the oxidant. The effect of synthetic conditions, such as the molar ratio of D-CSA to aniline (An), the concentration of D-CSA in the polymerization media, the reaction temperature and time, on the morphology and size as well as the electrical properties of the PANI–(D-CSA) was investigated. It was found that the above synthetic conditions, especially the molar ratio of D-CSA to An, strongly affected the morphology and formation probability of the resulting PANI. The micelles formed by D-CSA and anilinium cations act as the templates in the formation of PANI–(D-CSA) nanotubes.
