Student success plays a vital role in educational institutions, as it is often used as a metric for the institution’s performance. Early detection of students at risk, along with preventive measures, can drastically improve their success. Lately, machine learning techniques have been extensively used for prediction purpose. While there is a plethora of success stories in the literature, these techniques are mainly accessible to “computer science”, or more precisely, “artificial intelligence” literate educators. Indeed, the effective and efficient application of data mining methods entail many decisions, ranging from how to define student’s success, through which student attributes to focus on, up to which machine learning method is more appropriate to the given problem. This study aims to provide a step-by-step set of guidelines for educators willing to apply data mining techniques to predict student success. For this, the literature has been reviewed, and the state-of-the-art has been compiled into a systematic process, where possible decisions and parameters are comprehensively covered and explained along with arguments. Predicting academic success in higher education: literature review and best practices

A deep learning approach based on convolutional LSTM for detecting diabetes.

In general, patients who are unwell do not know with which outpatient department they should register, and can only get advice after they are diagnosed by a family doctor. This may cause a waste of time and medical resources. In this paper, we propose an attention-based bidirectional long short-term memory (Att-BiLSTM) model for service robots, which has the ability to classify outpatient categories according to textual content. With the outpatient text classification system, users can talk about their situation to a service robot and the robot can tell them which clinic they should register with. In the implementation of the proposed method, dialog text of users in the Taiwan E Hospital were collected as the training data set. Through natural language processing (NLP), the information in the dialog text was extracted, sorted, and converted to train the long-short term memory (LSTM) deep learning model. Experimental results verify the ability of the robot to respond to questions autonomously through acquired casual knowledge.

Outpatient Text Classification Using Attention-Based Bidirectional LSTM for Robot-Assisted Servicing in Hospital

Safety, Reliability and Risk Analysis: Beyond the Horizon

The paper is focused on the application of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network enabling patient health status prediction focusing the attention on diabetes. The proposed topic is an upgrade of a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) algorithm that can be fully embedded into an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) platform. The LSTM approach is applied for multi-attribute data processing and it is integrated into an information system based on patient management. To validate the proposed model, we have adopted a typical dataset used in the literature for data mining model testing. The study is focused on the procedure to follow for a correct LSTM data analysis by using artificial records (LSTM-AR-), improving the training dataset stability and test accuracy if compared with traditional MLP and LSTM approaches. The increase of the artificial data is important for all cases where only a few data of the training dataset are available, as for more practical cases. The paper represents a practical application about the LSTM approach into the decision support systems (DSSs) suitable for homecare assistance and for de-hospitalization processes. The paper goal is mainly to provide guidelines for the application of LSTM neural network in type I and II diabetes prediction adopting automatic procedures. A percentage improvement of test set accuracy of 6.5% has been observed by applying the LSTM-AR- approach, comparing results with up-to-date MLP works. The LSTM-AR- neural network can be applied as an alternative approach for all homecare platforms where not enough training sequential dataset is available.

LSTM DSS Automatism and Dataset Optimization for Diabetes Prediction

The proposed paper is related to a case of study of an e-health telemedicine system oriented on homecare assistance and suitable for de-hospitalization processes. The proposed platform is able to transfer efficiently the patient analyses from home to a control room of a clinic, thus potentially reducing costs and providing high-quality assistance services. The goal is to propose an innovative resources management platform (RMP) integrating an innovative homecare decision support system (DSS) based on a multilayer perceptron (MLP) artificial neural network (ANN). The study is oriented in predictive diagnostics by proposing an RMP integrating a KNIME (Konstanz Information Miner) MLP-ANN workflow experimented on blood pressure systolic values. The workflow elaborates real data transmitted via the cloud by medical smart sensors and provides a prediction of the patient status. The innovative RMP-DSS is then structured to enable three main control levels. The first one is a real-time alerting condition triggered when real-time values exceed a threshold. The second one concerns preventative action based on the analysis of historical patient data, and the third one involves alerting due to patient status prediction. The proposed study combines the management of processes with DSS outputs, thus optimizing the homecare assistance activities.

A Study of a Health Resources Management Platform Integrating Neural Networks and DSS Telemedicine for Homecare Assistance

In this paper are discussed some results related to an industrial project oriented on the integration of data mining tools into Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) platform. WSO2 ESB has been implemented for data transaction and to interface a client web service connected to a KNIME workflow behaving as a flexible data mining engine. In order to validate the implementation two test have been performed: the first one is related to the data management of two relational database management system (RDBMS) merged into one database whose data have been processed by KNIME dashboard statistical tool thus proving the data transfer of the prototype system; the second one is related to a simulation of two sensor data belonging to two distinct production lines connected to the same ESB. Specifically in the second example has been developed a practical case by processing by a Multilayered Perceptron (MLP) neural networks the temperatures of two milk production lines and by providing information about predictive maintenance. The platform prototype system is suitable for data automatism and Internet of Thing (IoT) related to Industry 4.0, and it is suitable for innovative hybrid system embedding different hardware and software technologies integrated with ESB, data mining engine and client web-services.

ESB Platform Integrating Knime Data Mining Tool Oriented on Industry 4.0 Based on Artificial Neural Network Predictive Maintenance

The proposed study is related to an experimental application of a multilayer perceptron (MLP) artificial neural network (ANN) oriented to predictive diagnostic and to automated patient monitoring in homecare assistance. By means of a control room it is possible to check periodically the heart rate of patient sending data from home. The ANN-MLP model is designed and developed by a KNIME workflow providing heart rate prediction with a good data processing performance. The paper describes all the steps of the data processing by highlighting the procedures to read the workflow outputs according with optimal heart rate values. The ANNMLP predictive diagnostic model is suitable to dehospitalization process enabling telemedicine and smart sensors able to measure patient physiological data. Finally, the paper provides solutions for big data system integration.
