A system and method in a building or vehicle for an actuator operation in response to a sensor according to a control logic, the system comprising a router or a gateway communicating with a device associated with the sensor and a device associated with the actuator over in-building or in-vehicle networks, and an external Internet-connected control server associated with the control logic implementing a PID closed linear control loop and communicating with the router over external network for controlling the in-building or in-vehicle phenomenon. The sensor may be a microphone or a camera, and the system may include voice or image processing as part of the control logic. A redundancy is used by using multiple sensors or actuators, or by using multiple data paths over the building or vehicle internal or external communication. The networks may be wired or wireless, and may be BAN, PAN, LAN, WAN, or home networks.

Apparatus and method for collecting and analyzing communications data

Apparatus and method for establishing 'virtual connections' through a switched data communications network which provides higher speed, lower cost, integrated services, and manageability. Once the virtual connection is established, the switches can move connectionless data packets along the established path in a straight-forward manner without transformation of the data packets. The complexities associated with routing data are pushed out of the data transfer path and are instead handled at connection establishment time. This allows the switches to be simpler and therefore faster. Also, the switching decision is substantially protocol independent and transparent to the end systems. It also yields important benefits in terms of manageability because capabilities which were too costly to perform on a packet-by-packet basis can readily be performed at connection establishment time. Thus, a new level of manageability can be achieved which was not practical with datagram oriented technology. Improved allocation of bandwidth and a new best path searching method are also provided.

Network having secure fast packet switching and guaranteed quality of service

An internetworking system for exchanging packets of information between networks, the system comprising a network interface module for connecting a network to the system, receiving packets from the network in a native packet format used by the network and converting each received native packet to a packet having a generic format common to all networks connected to the system, and converting each of the generic packets to the native packet format for transmission to the network; a communication channel for carrying the generic packets to and from the network interface module, the channel having bandwidth; a first processing module for controlling dynamic allocation and deallocation of the channel bandwidth to the network connected to the system via the network interface module; and a second processing module for receiving all of the generic packets put on the channel by the network interface module, determining a destination network interface module for each of the generic packets on the channel, determining whether each of the generic packet needs to be bridged to the destination network interface module, and transmitting each of the generic packets determined to need bridging to the destination network interface module via the channel.

System having central processor for transmitting generic packets to another processor to be altered and transmitting altered packets back to central processor for routing

A multi-port packet-based bridge is described in which packet transmissions on particular ports or between ports may be monitored on another, monitoring port. Efficient operation is realized by using a multi-processor environment and data structures that allow a packet received on one port to be transmitted to multiple ports without being "copied" multiple times. By using a Supervisory Access Terminal, it is possible to specify various circumstances under which a packet will be sent to the monitoring port. These circumstances include monitoring of all packets incoming to a selected port (or ports), all packets forwarded to a selected port (or ports), and packets generated internally and sent to a selected port (or ports). In addition, all packets forwarded from one selected port to another selected port may be monitored. Port monitoring is supported by particular data structures that promote efficient dispatching of packets and by a Bridging Cache that retains the results of recent dispatch calculations. Similar techniques are applied to multi-port routers.

Communication apparatus and methods

A network switching system is described. The network switching system comprises a first port coupled to a source, a second port coupled to a destination, and multiplexer means coupled to the first port and the second port for transferring data between the first port and the second port by selectively connecting the first port with the second port. The data is transferred from the source to the destination through the first port, the multiplexer means, and the second port. The network switching system further includes processing means coupled to the multiplexer means for assisting transmission of the data by receiving the data from the first port when the first port does not indicate a port for the destination. A method of transferring data from a source to a destination via a network switching system is also described.
