The United Kingdom has a fundamentally different orga nization for its interlibrary loan system. Technological ad vances and political forces are reshaping the structure of the interlending system. Efforts of the British Library Doc ument Supply Centre to retain its central role include: in creasing technological sophistication; carefully moderat ing its price increases to British libraries; and increasing its foreign revenues. The structure of interlibrary loan in the United Kingdom is summarized and the changing technol ogy, economics, and political dimensions of interlibrary loan are discussed. Parallels with and implications for American libraries are presented.

Resource sharing has become a driving force in the operations and policies of academic libraries due to declining budgets and the increasing cost of published materials. This paper examines the issue of resource sharing by academic libraries in two ways. First, this paper provides a brief overview and bibliography of the literature on resource sharing by academic libraries from 1979-1996, including research studies, trend and issue papers, and project reports. The most common publication was a journal article providing a descriptive report of a resource-sharing project. Second, findings are reported from a study commissioned by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to provide a preliminary evaluation of the TexShare resource sharing consortia after twelve months of operation.
