The Internet of Things (IoT) aims at connecting a very large number of devices using an Internet-like architecture. Machine-to-machine (M2M) networks are considered the main component of the IoT. Long-term evolution (LTE) and LTE-advanced (LTE-A) are excellent candidates for supporting M2M communications due to their native IP connectivity and scalability for massive number of devices. Therefore, LTE schedulers should be capable of satisfying the needs of M2M devices such as timing constraints and specific quality of service (QoS) requirements. In this paper, we present a survey on uplink scheduling techniques over LTE and LTE-A from an M2M perspective. We focus on the aspects associated with M2M communications; namely, power efficiency, QoS support, multihop connectivity, and scalability for massive number of devices.

Classification of LTE Uplink Scheduling Techniques: An M2M Perspective

This paper provides an overview of multi-cell coordinated scheduling and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques in LTE. We first discuss single-user MIMO (SU-MIMO) and multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) for LTE and identify potential techniques for further improving the performance of LTE, such as enhanced channel state information feedback and adaptive switching between SU-MIMO and MU-MIMO. Then, we address inter-cell interference mitigation techniques for downlink and uplink, respectively. Finally, potential research challenges and topics in the area are discussed.

By the design and optimization of upcoming radio access techniques and a further evolution of the existing system, the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) had laid down the foundations of the future Long Term Evolution (LTE) advanced standards-the 3GPP candidate for 4G. This paper offers an overview of the research work carried out to meet the requirements of 4G. The various technology components like wideband transmission and spectrum sharing, multiantenna solutions, coordinated multiple transmission/reception (CoMP) and relaying, introduced to meet the requirements for LTE Advanced systems, have been discussed.

Long Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-Advanced) is the next step in LTE evolution and allows operators to improve network performance and service capabilities through smooth deployment of new techniques and technologies. LTE-Advanced uses some new features on top of the existing LTE standards to provide better user experience and higher throughputs. Some of the most significant features introduced in LTE-Advanced are carrier aggregation, enhancements in heterogeneous networks, coordinated multipoint transmission and reception, enhanced multiple input multiple output usage and deployment of relay nodes in the radio network. Mentioned features are mainly aimed to enhance the radio access part of the cellular networks. This survey article presents an overview of the key radio access features and functionalities of the LTE-Advanced radio access network, supported by the simulation results. We also provide a detailed review of the literature together with a very rich list of the references for each of the features. An LTE-Advanced roadmap and the latest updates and trends in LTE markets are also presented.

The World Radio Conference in 2007 identified additional spectrum for IMT-2000 and IMT-Advanced systems. That's why also 3GPP has started a feasibility study for LTE-Advanced techniques to continuously evolve LTE technology. LTE-Advanced is expected to enable download peak rates over 1Gbps at 100MHz bandwidth and in the upload peak rates over 0.5Gbps. Novel techniques on radio interface are going to be analyzed especially to improve spectral efficiency and cell edge performance. Advanced Antenna systems, Multi-User and Multi-Cell Multiple-Input Multiple-Output, Coordinated Multi-Point (CoMP) transmission schemes for interference reduction, Cooperative Relaying are some of potential features to enhance the Next Generation Mobile Network.
