Journal ArticleDOI
Human mucosal leishmaniasis: neutrophils infiltrate areas of tissue damage that express high levels of Th17-related cytokines.
Viviane Boaventura,Claire da Silva Santos,Cristina Ribeiro de Barros Cardoso,José de Andrade,Washington Luis Conrado dos Santos,Jorge Clarêncio,João Santana da Silva,Valéria M. Borges,Manoel Barral-Netto,Cláudia Brodskyn,Aldina Barral +10 more
TL;DR: Observations demonstrate the existence of Th17 cells in ML lesions associated with neutrophils in areas of tissue injury and suggest that IL‐17 is involved in ML pathogenesis.
Journal ArticleDOI
CD8(+) Granzyme B(+)-Mediated Tissue Injury vs. CD4(+)IFNγ(+)-Mediated Parasite Killing in Human Cutaneous Leishmaniasis
Claire da Silva Santos,Claire da Silva Santos,Viviane Boaventura,Viviane Boaventura,Cristina Ribeiro de Barros Cardoso,Natalia Machado Tavares,Natalia Machado Tavares,Morgana J. Lordelo,Morgana J. Lordelo,Almerio Noronha,Jackson Maurício Lopes Costa,Valéria M. Borges,Camila I. de Oliveira,Johan Van Weyenbergh,Aldina Barral,Aldina Barral,Manoel Barral-Netto,Manoel Barral-Netto,Cláudia Brodskyn,Cláudia Brodskyn +19 more
TL;DR: A dichotomy in human CL is revealed: CD8+ granzyme B+T cells mediate tissue injury, whereas CD4+IFN-γ+T Cells mediate parasite killing.
Journal ArticleDOI
Vaccine effectiveness of heterologous CoronaVac plus BNT162b2 in Brazil
Thiago Cerqueira-Silva,Srinivasa Vittal Katikireddi,V. de Araujo Oliveira,Renzo J Flores-Ortiz,Juracy Bertoldo dos Santos Junior,Enny S. Paixão,Chris Robertson,Gerson Oliveira Penna,Guilherme Loureiro Werneck,Mauricio Lima Barreto,Neil Pearce,Aziz Sheikh,Manoel Barral-Netto,Viviane Boaventura +13 more
TL;DR: In this paper , a test-negative design study involving almost 14 million people was conducted to estimate the effectiveness of CoronaVac over time and BNT162b2 booster vaccination against RT-PCR-confirmed severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and severe COVID-19 outcomes (hospitalization or death).
Journal Article
Parasite-driven in vitro human lymphocyte cytotoxicity against autologous infected macrophages from mucosal leishmaniasis.
TL;DR: The observation of parasite-driven autologous cytotoxic responses in patients with ML, the destructive form of leishmaniasis, but not in CL, suggests that this phenomenon is involved in tissue pathology rather than in protection, relevant to strategies aimed at limiting pathologic tissue destruction.
Journal ArticleDOI
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is highly sensitive for diagnosis of mucosal leishmaniasis
J. Oliveira,Fernanda O. Novais,Camila I. de Oliveira,Antonio C. da Cruz Junior,Léon Fábio Campos,Any V. da Rocha,Viviane Boaventura,Almerio Noronha,Jackson Maurício Lopes Costa,Aldina Barral,Aldina Barral +10 more
TL;DR: These findings have led to propose guidelines for the diagnosis of ML that use PCR as the principal method of parasitological confirmation of cases, which are higher than all of the other diagnostic methods studied.
