Fluoride adsorption onto granular ferric hydroxide: effects of ionic strength, pH, surface loading, and major co-existing anions.

A comprehensive understanding of the solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) composition is crucial to developing high-energy batteries based on lithium metal anodes. A particularly contentious issue concerns the presence of LiH in the SEI. Here we report on the use of synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function analysis to identify and differentiate two elusive components, LiH and LiF, in the SEI of lithium metal anodes. LiH is identified as a component of the SEI in high abundance, and the possibility of its misidentification as LiF in the literature is discussed. LiF in the SEI is found to have different structural features from LiF in the bulk phase, including a larger lattice parameter and a smaller grain size (<3 nm). These characteristics favour Li+ transport and explain why an ionic insulator, like LiF, has been found to be a favoured component for the SEI. Finally, pair distribution function analysis reveals key amorphous components in the SEI. X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement analysis confirm the presence of LiH in the solid–electrolyte interphase of lithium metal anodes.

Identification of LiH and nanocrystalline LiF in the solid-electrolyte interphase of lithium metal anodes

It seems likely that isotope effects are most clearly manifested in crystal lattice dynamics, which is evidenced by works in this field that have been published for more than half a century. A great number of stable isotopes and well-developed methods of their separation has made it possible to date to grow crystals of C, LiH, ZnO, ZnSe, CuCl, GaN, GaAs, CdS, Cu2O, Si, Ge and α-Sn with a controllable isotopic composition. The accumulated voluminous theoretical and experimental data suggest that the isotopic composition of a crystal lattice exerts some influence on the thermal, elastic, and vibrational properties of crystals. These effects are quite large and can be readily measured by modern experimental techniques (ultrasound, Brillouin and Raman scattering, and neutron scattering). For example, the change in the lattice constant is Δa/a=10−3 to 10−4, while the change δcik in the elastic constants amounts to several percent. The maximum km (where km is the maximum of thermal conductivity) measured for the most highly enriched 70 Ge (99.99%) sample is 10.5 kW/mK, one order of magnitude higher than for the natural Ge (analogous for C and Si). In addition, crystals of different isotopic compositions possess different Debye temperatures. This difference between a LiH crystal and its deuteride exceeds hundred degrees. Of the same order of magnitude is the difference between Debye temperatures for diamond crystals. Very pronounced and general effects of isotopic substitution are observed in phonon spectra. The scattering lines in isotopically mixed crystals are not only shifted (the shift of LO lines exceeds 100 cm−1) but are also broadened. This broadening is related to the isotopic disorder of a crystal lattice. It is shown in this review that the degree of change in the scattering potential is different for different isotopic mixed crystals. In the case of germanium and diamond crystals, phonon scattering is weak, which allows one to successfully apply the coherent potential approximation (CPA) for describing shift and broadening of scattering lines. In the case of lithium hydride, the change in the scattering potential is so strong that it results in phonon localization, which is directly observed in experiments. Capture the thermal neutrons by isotope nuclei followed by nuclei decay produces new elements in a very large number of possibilities for isotope selective doping of different materials. The review closes with a section describing future developments and applications of isotope technology and engineering.

Isotope effects on the lattice dynamics of crystals

The large number of available stable isotopes and well developed isotope separation technology have enabled growing crystals of C, LiH, ZnO, CuCl, CuBr, Cu2O, CdS, ?-Sn, Ge, Si, etc. with a controlled isotope composition. Experimental and theoretical studies provide evidence that the isotope effect has an influence on the thermal, elastic, and vibrational properties of crystals. In this paper it is shown that in Ge and C crystals isotope effect causes only weak phonon scattering whereas in LiH the scattering potential changes are so strong that they lead to experimentally observable phonon localization. It is emphasized that a systematic description of isotope effects requires that anharmonicity be taken into account.

Isotope effects in lattice dynamics

Plasma chemically modified carbon nanofibers were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy with regard to the content of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen and the contribution of carboxylic groups or ester, carbonyl and hydroxylic groups or ether on the surface. Unfortunately, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy only provides an average value of the first 10 to 15 molecular layers. For comparison, depth profiles were measured and wet chemical methods were applied to estimate the thickness of the functionalized layer and the distribution of oxygen-containing functional groups within the near-surface layers. The results indicate that the fiber surface is covered by a monomolecular oxygen-containing layer and that plasma treatment allows a complete oxygen functionalization of the uppermost surface layer. The best conditions for plasma treatment found within the set of parameters applied to generate complete functionalization are: plasma gas O2/Ar ratio 1:1, gas pressure 1–1.5 hPa, plasma power 80 W, treatment time ≥ 5 min. Additionally, three quick and easy methods are presented to estimate the efficiency of plasma treatment with regard to surface functionalization: pyrolysis, contact angle measurements, and light permeability measurements of aqueous carbon nanofiber suspensions.
