Geometrical considerations are presented to show that dayside magnetic merging when constrained to act only where the fields are antiparallel results in lines of merging that converge at the polar cusps. An important consequence of this geometry is that no accelerated flows are predicted across the dayside magnetopause. Acceleration owing to merging acts in opposition to the magnetosheath flow at the merging point and produces the variably directed, slower-than-magnetosheath flows observed in the entry layer. Another consequence of the merging geometry is that much of the time closed field lines constitute the subsolar region of the magnetopause. The manner in which the polar cap convection patterns predicted by the proposed geometry change as the interplanetary field is rotated through 360 deg provides a unifying description of how the observed single circular vortex and the crescent-shaped double vortex patterns mutually evolve under the influence of a single operating principle.

Dayside merging and cusp geometry

Comprehensive plasma observations carried out on board the Heos 2 satellite have provided the first systematic description of plasmas in the distant polar magnetosphere. These observations have revealed the presence of a persistent layer of tailward-flowing magnetosheathlike plasma inside of and adjacent to the magnetopause. This region has been termed the ‘plasma mantle.’ The mantle has been found to extend over the entire surface of the magnetosphere tailward of the polar cusp and northward of the plasma sheet. Vela observations of a ‘magnetotail boundary layer’ obtained in the vicinity of the plasma sheet by Hones and coworkers refer to the same phenomenon. The salient features of the plasma mantle as provided by Heos measurements from February to December 1972 can be summarized as follows: (1) The mantle was found to be present in over 70% of the passes through the polar magnetosphere in the region described above. (2) Its thickness varies greatly, ranging up to ≳ 4 RE, and does not appear to depend significantly on position or the state of the magnetosphere as measured by Kp. (3) A tailward-directed bulk flow parallel to the local terrestrial magnetic field was nearly always distinctly measurable. It was found to lie usually between 100 and 200 km s−1 and was always less than the concurrent flow speed in the nearby magneto sheath. (4) The flow speed in the mantle is positively correlated with the flow speeds in the magnetosheath and solar wind but depends only very weakly, if at all, on distance from the polar cusp, i.e., on XGSM. (5) A narrow region of low density and/or low flow speed plasma, i.e., a ‘gap,’ 0.1–0.2 RE thick, is frequently observed between the plasma mantle and the magnetopause. (6) The mantle protons are normally significantly cooler along B than perpendicular, i.e., T∥ < T⊥. (7) The proton density, temperature, and bulk speed all tend to decrease gradually with depth inside the magnetopause, but this trend can at times be obscured by fluctuations and magnetopause motions. At the inner edge of the mantle the proton distribution is often very narrow in both energy and angle, i.e., relatively cold, before it finally disappears below the 100-eV threshold of the instrument. It is concluded, after an appraisal of several possible mechanisms, that the most probable cause for the formation of the mantle is the day side merging of terrestrial and interplanetary field lines.

Heos 2 plasma observations in the distant polar magnetosphere: The plasma mantle

Several previous and new S3-3 satellite results on DC electric fields, field-aligned currents, and waves are described, interpreted theoretically, and applied to the understanding of auroral particle acceleration at altitudes below 8000 km. These results include the existence of two spatial scale sizes (less than 0.1 degree and a few degrees invariant latitude) in both the perpendicular and parallel electric fields; the predominance of S-shaped rather than V-shaped equipotential contours on both spatial saales; the correlated presence of field-aligned currents, low frequency wave turbulence, coherent ion cyclotron wave emissions and accelerated upmoving ions and downgoing electrons; intense waves inside electrostatic shocks and important wave-particle interactions therein; correlations of field-aligned currents with magnetospheric boundaries that are determined by convection electric field measurements; electron acceleration producing discrete auroral arcs in the smaller scale fields and producing inverted-V events in the larger scale fields; ion and electron acceleration due to both wave-particle interactions and the parallel electric fields. Further analyses of acceleration mechanisms and energetics are presented.

Satellite measurements and theories of low altitude auroral particle acceleration

Observed magnetospheric asymmetries which occur in response to the y-component of the IMF are discussed in terms of the open model of the magnetosphere. The torque which the IMF exerts on the magnetosphere about the Earth-Sun axis results in asymmetric addition of open flux tubes to the tail lobes about the noon-midnight meridian. In response an IMF-associated By field appears across the tail lobes. The ratio between internal and external By fields will generally be same as the ratio between internal and external electric fields. If the tail flux asymmetry is related to an asymmetric distribution of the field normal to the tail magnetopause then an asymmetry in tail lobe electric field and plasma populations will immediately result, as observed. If the flux asymmetry is associated with a twist in the tail then the By field will appear but not necessary the electric field and plasma asymmetries. Generally both effects may occur together. Simple open tail lobe models are derived which demonstrate the asymmetry effects. These represent more physically satisfactory models of the tail and its plasma populations than available hitherto, but they remain somewhat unrealistic in a number of respects. Finally, it is shown that the observed asymmetry effects on closed (auroral zone) field lines may be at least qualitatively accounted for if the cross-magnetosphere IMF-associated By field pervades not only the open but also the closed field line regime, as may be generally expected.

Magnetospheric asymmetries associated with the y-component of the IMF

A quantitative three-dimensional model is proposed for the electric potential arising from magnetopause reconnection, in which several approximations are made concerning configuration of the magnetosheath flow, limitations on the magnitude of the reconnection speed, and the geometry of the problem. These approximations are such that the model yields an upper limit for the potential. The magnitude of the polar cap ionospheric electric field computed from this model is larger than that measured on balloons by an average factor of about 3, and the model reproduces the temporal variations of the experimental data. It is concluded that magnetopause reconnection is a highly efficient process that is probably the dominant mechanism driving polar cap convection and supplying energy to the magnetosphere. It seems that the most efficient way for the solar wind to pass the magnetospheric obstacle is by magnetopause reconnection.

A quantitative model for the potential resulting from reconnection with an arbitrary interplanetary magnetic field

More than 200 hours of ionospheric electric field measurements taken on balloons flown from three polar cap sites have been analyzed to determine average properties of the large-scale polar cap electric field and its dependencies on the interplanetary magnetic field. The major component of this electric field was directed from dawn to dusk and produced an average polar cap potential drop of about 55 kV. The magnitude of this potential provides an upper limit of about 700 RE for the length of the magnetospheric tail and implies an energy input from the solar wind to the magnetosphere of about 5 × 1019 ergs/sec. The dawn to dusk component of the high-latitude polar cap electric field responds to Bz, the northward component of the interplanetary magnetic field, on a time scale ≲1 hour and with an average increase of about 3 mV/m for each 1 γ decrease of Bz. The hourly averages of the electric field data at each of the three sites are well described by a two-cell convection pattern whose location depends on the y component of the interplanetary magnetic field. When By is positive (negative), the two-cell convection pattern shifts toward dawn (dusk) in the northern hemisphere with the following consequences: the maximum intensity of the northern polar cap dawn to dusk electric field component occurs at local morning (evening), and the auroral zone return flow reaches higher latitudes in the evening (morning). Evidence of the vector nature of the interaction between interplanetary and terrestrial magnetic fields is provided by the observation that the above By dependent signatures are most evident when Bz is most negative.
