A review of applications of Analytic Hierarchy Process in operations management

In this paper, we discuss scheduling problems in semiconductor manufacturing. Starting from describing the manufacturing process, we identify typical scheduling problems found in semiconductor manufacturing systems. We describe batch scheduling problems, parallel machine scheduling problems, job shop scheduling problems, scheduling problems with auxiliary resources, multiple orders per job scheduling problems, and scheduling problems related to cluster tools. We also present important solution techniques that are used to solve these scheduling problems by means of specific examples, and report on known implementations. Finally, we summarize some of the challenges in scheduling semiconductor manufacturing operations.

A survey of problems, solution techniques, and future challenges in scheduling semiconductor manufacturing operations

This paper reviews the literature related to the class of scheduling problems that involve sequence-dependent setup times (costs), an important consideration in many practical applications. It focuses on papers published within the last decade, addressing a variety of machine configurations including single machine, parallel machine, flow shop, and job shop systems and reviews the optimization and heuristic solution methods used for each category. Since lot sizing is so intimately related to scheduling, this paper reviews work that integrates these issues in relationship to each configuration. This paper provides a perspective of this line of research, gives conclusions, and discusses fertile research opportunities posed by this class of scheduling problems.

Scheduling and lot sizing with sequence-dependent setup: A literature review

Complexity and variety of modern multiobjective optimisation problems result in the emergence of numerous search techniques, from traditional mathematical programming to various randomised heuristics. A key issue raised consequently is how to evaluate and compare solution sets generated by these multiobjective search techniques. In this article, we provide a comprehensive review of solution set quality evaluation. Starting with an introduction of basic principles and concepts of set quality evaluation, this article summarises and categorises 100 state-of-the-art quality indicators, with the focus on what quality aspects these indicators reflect. This is accompanied in each category by detailed descriptions of several representative indicators and in-depth analyses of their strengths and weaknesses. Furthermore, issues regarding attributes that indicators possess and properties that indicators are desirable to have are discussed, in the hope of motivating researchers to look into these important issues when designing quality indicators and of encouraging practitioners to bear these issues in mind when selecting/using quality indicators. Finally, future trends and potential research directions in the area are suggested, together with some guidelines on these directions.

Dealing with subjectivity in early product design phase: A systematic approach to exploit Quality Function Deployment potentials

Screening weapon systems development projects is a complex, multicriteria decision problem that must be accomplished within a constrained resource environment. This paper presents a hybrid decision support methodology for use in the screening of weapon systems development projects. The hybrid methodology integrates the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) with a 0-1 integer portfolio optimization model. An AHP component allows the decision maker to incorporate qualitative and intangible criteria into the decision-making process and use the priority rankings of the AHP to represent a measure of value in the 0-1 integer model objective function. The hybrid methodology is extremely flexible and the decision maker can tailor both the AHP and the 0-1 integer optimization model to represent a specific decision-making situation. To fully appreciate the added value of implementing the hybrid screening methodology, a group of Air Force decision makers applied the hybrid methodology to a realistic weapon-systems project screening activity. Results indicate that decision support provided by the methodology could lead to substantial improvements in a weapon-systems portfolio value.

Semi-conductor manufacturing is arguably one of the most complex manufacturing processes in existence today. A semi-conductor wafer fabrication facility is comprised of batching machines, parallel machines, machines with sequence-dependent set-ups, and re-circulating product flow. The individual job release times and due dates combine with the other processing environment characteristics to form a ‘complex’ job shop scheduling problem. We first present a mixed-integer program (MIP) to minimize total weighted tardiness in a complex job shop. Since the problem is NP-hard, we compare a heuristic based on the MIP (MIP heuristic) with both a tuned version of a modified shifting bottleneck heuristic (SB heuristic) and three dispatching rules using random problem instances of a representative model from the literature. Evaluation of nondominated solution sets for k-objective optimization problems: An exact method and approximations

The Factory Operations portion of the 2001 International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS) indicates that real time scheduling is one of the potential solutions for the semiconductor industry to preserve the decades-long trend of 30% per year reduction in cost per function. However, scheduling wafer fabrication facilities is a very difficult problem. There are several main features that complicate scheduling these systems including: a large number of processing steps, re-entrant flows, batch tools, planned and unplanned equipment downtimes, sequence-dependent tool setups, high levels of automation, and the fact that some processing steps require auxiliary resources (e.g. reticles). The Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) and International SEMATECH recently created the Factory Operations Research Center (FORCe). As one of the initial set of FORCe projects, a team of researchers from two US and three German institutions were funded to investugate a shiftingbottleneck heuristic-based approach to scheduling wafer fabrication facilities. In this paper, we briefly describe the FORCe program and discuss the four major research tasks associated with the three year scheduling project.
