A planar dual-band antenna array for point-to-point communication is presented. The proposed compact antenna array operates at 2.4-2.5 GHz (4%) and 5.1-5.5 GHz (7.5%) with |S11| <; -10 dB, and corresponding gains of 11-13.3 dBi and 10.6-14.5 dBi respectively. It consists of four branches suspended at a height of 5 mm above a 250 × 250 mm ground plane. Each quarter consists of a series-fed meandered step-impedance filter connected to a L-shaped radiator, and they transverse horizon tally away from the epicenter. The insertion loss method with non-redundant synthesis for filter design is applied to control the radiation aperture of the antenna array, allowing both the 2.4 GHz and 5.5 GHz radiators to co-exist and operate independently. A stable broadside radiation pattern and gain are achieved.

A Planar Dualband Antenna Array

The paper presents a two-dimensional ultrawideband printed antenna array of 64 pentagonal dipoles operating in the 60 GHz range. The shape and dimensions of the dipoles are optimized to obtain as wide as possible bandwidth. The bandwidth is greater than 30%, gain is between 22 dB and 23.5 dB, sidelobe suppression is better than 10 dB, and cross-polarization suppression greater than 35 dB.

Ultrawideband printed antenna array for 60 GHz frequency range

A metal-insulator-metal (MIM) composite right/left-handed (CRLH) series-mode zeroth-order resonant antenna (ZORA) optimized for the 24 GHz ISM band is presented and compared to a series-fed patch array (SFPA) antenna. The CRLH ZORA exhibits superior performances for relatively short lengths (≪ 3λ 0 ) whereas the SFPA may performs better, depending on the specific design, when the length is very long (≫ 5λ 0 ), so that the resonant antennas operate as leaky-wave antennas with a leakage factor proportional to the density of the radiators along the structure. To our knowledge it the first time that the leaky-wave operation of an electrically very large “resonator” has been explicitly identified. The ZORA is particularly recommended for average electrical sizes in the order of 2λ 0 , where it should be systematically superior to a SFPA.

Comparison between CRLH zeroth-order antenna and series-fed microstrip patch array antenna

In this study, a compact series-fed center-fed open-stub (SFCFOS) linear array antenna for K-band applications is presented. The antenna is composed of a single-line 10-element linear array. A symmetrical Chebyshev amplitude distribution (CAD) is used to obtain a low sidelobe characteristic against a uniform amplitude distribution (UAD). The amplitude is controlled by varying the width of the microstrip patch elements, and open-ended stubs are arranged next to the last antenna element to use the energy of the radiating signal more effectively. We insert a series-fed stub between two patches and obtain a low mutual coupling for a 4.28-mm center-to-center spacing (0.7λ at 21 GHz). A prototype of the antenna is fabricated and tested. The overall size of the uniform linear array is 7.04 × 1.05 × 0.0563 λg3 and that of the Chebyshev linear array is 9.92 × 1.48 × 0.0793 λ g3. The UAD array yields a |S11| < –10 dB bandwidth of 1.33% (20.912–21.192 GHz) and 1.45% (20.89–21.196 GHz) for the CAD. The uniform array design gives a −23 dB return loss, and the Chebyshev array achieves a −30.68 dB return loss at the center frequency with gains of 15.3 dBi and 17 dBi, respectively. The simulated and measured results are in good agreement.

SFCFOS Uniform and Chebyshev Amplitude Distribution Linear Array Antenna for K-Band Applications

A novel dual-frequency concept for series-fed microstrip patch array antennas is proposed. An identical near field distribution following an identical far field characteristic was achieved at two different frequencies. The conventional series fed array comes with a uniform aperture distribution for patches of same width. By exploiting the dispersion of this periodic structure the same cosine aperture distribution at two different frequencies is obtained. Due to the cosine aperture distribution a low side lobe level of 23 dB is intrinsically achieved for the two operating frequencies, 23 GHz and 25 GHz. This concept is particularly suited for small frequency ratios (ƒ+/ƒ− ≪ 1.3).

A dual-frequency series-fed patch array antenna

A 40 GHz 4x24 element microstrip array consisting of rectangular microstrip resonators is described. The antenna is developed using scaling techniques. A microstrip feed network is calculated including discontinuity effects. Return loss, bandwidth and radiation characteristics are given.
