A submersible electric motor driven pump has a motor chamber and a pump chamber separated by a seal chamber. Inboard and outboard shaft seals(MS1,MS2) immersed in an oil buffer fluid within the seal chamber restricts the flow of liquid from the seal chamber into the pump and motor chambers. An integral or externally mounted pre-pressurized buffer fluid reservoir (PA) maintains a positive fluid pressure in the seal chamber relative to the external pressure at working depth, and maintains a suitable buffer fluid level within the seal chamber, in order to prevent the ingress of the pumped media through the outboard seal(MS2). A unique impeller design (631) circulates fluid within the seal chamber in the region of the outboard shaft seal (MS2), allowing continuous dry run operation when used in conjunction with an integrally cooled motor design. A cartridge shaft sleeve subassembly, having a bearing (3) configured between the inboard and outboard seals (MS1,MS2), facilitates maintenance.

An enclosed pump motor includes an aluminum housing made by an impact extrusion process. The housing is cylindrical having an integrally-formed closed end with integral fastener bosses for attaching a pump thereto and an integrally-formed thickened cylindrical portion defining a shaft bore for receiving the motor shaft. At the other end, the cylindrical housing is open for receiving the motor. A motor cover is attached to the motor receiving end of the housing by crimping or bending a part of the housing into indents formed in the housing. The motor cover includes a threaded bore adapted to receive a threaded grommet wherein three connector pins are imbedded. The connector pins are connected to electrical power carrying conductors and/or switch conductors leading to a fluid level sensor switch. The conductor-to-pin connections are imbedded within the grommet and are hermetically sealed. The connector pins extend into the housing and are electrically connected to corresponding connectors leading to the electric motor.

Enclosed pump motor and wiring thereof

In the operation of a compressor system in a subsea station for transporting a well stream, separated well stream gas is supplied to a compressor (12, 13) which is arranged with its motor (8) in a common drive atmosphere within a pressure shell (21). As the drive atmosphere there is used a suitable, continually supplied dry extraneous gas, which is supplied to the well stream. There may be used a suitable dry extraneous gas which is stored in liquid form in an insulated container. There is also described a compressor system wherein there may be used as the drive atmosphere a continuously supplied, suitable dry extraneous gas.

Fluid pump having a pressure sealed motor chamber

A motor system using a totally enclosed fancooled (TEFC) electric motor (20) to provide power. The motor enclosure may be sealed with a variety of sealing devices (149) including a double mechanical seal, and/or a repeller positioned adjacent the motor enclosure. A release mechanism prevents the fan (108) from creating excessive drag when the system is immersed in water. The fan cools the motor when the water level is below the motor, and the surrounding water combines with the fan to cool the motor when the water level rises to at least partially surround the motor. The release mechanism can take the form of a shear key, a torque-release clutch or flexible fan blades.

Immersible motor system

A submersible electric motor driven pump having a motor chamber and a pump chamber separated by a seal chamber. A shaft seal is immersed in oil in the seal chamber and prevents the flow of liquid from the pump chamber into the motor chamber. The motor chamber is filled with gas under pressure which aids in sealing it. The gas is introduced to a pressure operated switch and a pressure gauge, which may be located above the surface of the liquid in which the pump is submerged. The pressure operated switch is connected in circuit with the power controls to the motor and is held closed by a predetermined minimum pressure of gas in the motor chamber. In case of a pressure loss from a shaft seal failure the switch is automatically opened and power to the motor is interrupted thus preventing pumped liquid from entering the motor chamber while the motor is energized.
