Intelligent network concepts in mobile communications

Various types of personal telecommunications (PT) services are summarized, and the service information required to provide them are identified. Information-allocation schemes over multiple networks are examined. Hierarchical information-handling and information-localization schemes and their applicability to PT services are discussed. The effects of hierarchical information handling and information localization are discussed in the framework of the intelligent network. >

Hierarchical and distributed information handling for UPT

A communications system query processing element, for example a home location register for a mobile communications system, includes a plurality of application processors. First data such as permanent data relating to a plurality of mobile subscribers (subscription information etc.) is available at all application processors, whereas second data such as temporary data relating to the plurality of subscription is partitioned between the application processors. Queries are allocated via a transaction bus to an available application processor. If it is not the correct one for the subscriber originating the query, it is redirected via the transaction bus. This arrangement permits a linear growth in terms of database to be achieved with increasing numbers of subscribers by the addition of application processors as necessary and in a manner not involving a processing bottleneck.

Query processing in a mobile communications system home location register

As the number of users in mobile communications increases, it is suggested to reduce the cell size as a means to increase traffic capacity. Even though the mobile systems with small sized cells may handle large traffic capacity, they may cause the degradations in quality of services, such as the increase of handoff failures and long processing time due to the increasing number of handoffs. In order to investigate the effect of handoffs on microcell-based personal communication networks, we first model the personal mobility problem in microcell environments and estimate the required signaling traffic load due to handoff calls in a given network configuration. Finally, a typical PCN network configuration with some network parameters is numerically evaluated in terms of the signaling traffic on each signaling link between PCN network elements, such as base station controllers, mobile switching centers, and visitor location registers.

This paper describes the Pan-European digital mobile communication system, defined by GSM, which is called in the following the 'GSM-System, its basic characteristis and its influence on the implementation strategy. The first part deals with the basic characteristics of the GSM-System, its system elements and the interworking between these elements. Network scenarios explain the overall message flow through the system. The second part highlights strategies for the implementation of system elements. It describes the requirements to be fulfilled by elements like Base Station, Mobile Services Switching Center Visitor and Home Location Register, Authentication Center and Operation and Maintenance Center. The third part deals with strategies for the mobile com munication network architecture and associated network topologies. The questions of overlay network and integration of the GSM-System into the ISDN are treated, as well as the associated interfacing strategies. The fourth part explaines in more detail basic implementation strategiesfor various system elements. Special emphasis is put on how an JSDN exchange will be expanded to provide the additional GSM functionality of a Mobile Services Switching Center (MSC). It will be demonstrated how the Visitor Location Register (VLR) and Equipment Identity Register (EIR) databases may be integrated in the ISDN exchange.
