Series-Fed Microstrip Antenna Arrays and Their Application to Omni-Directional Antennas

Various arrays consisting of finite number of printed dipoles on electrically large dielectric coated circular cylinders are investigated using a hybrid method of moments/Green's function technique in the spatial domain. This is basically an "element by element" approach in which the mutual coupling between dipoles through space as well as surface waves is incorporated. The efficiency of the method comes from the computation of the Green's function, where three types of spatial domain Green's function representations are used interchangeably, based on their computational efficiency and regions where they remain accurate. Numerical results are presented in the form of array current distributions, active reflection coefficient and far-field pattern to indicate the efficiency and accuracy of the method. Furthermore, these results are compared with similar results obtained from finite arrays of printed dipoles on grounded planar dielectric slabs. It is shown that planar approximations, except for small separations, can not be used due to the mutual coupling between the array elements. Consequently, basic performance metrics of printed dipole arrays on coated cylinders show significant discrepancies when compared to their planar counterparts.

Analysis and Design of Conformal Array Antennas

Microstrip antennas are widely used in wireless communication systems because they are lightweight, compact, conformable to planar and non-planar surfaces, simple and inexpensive to manufacture using modern printed-circuit technology. Concept of microstrip radiators was first proposed in 1953, but it was only in 1970s that practical antennas were fabricated. With features such as low cost, lightweight and Integra table on board containing RF or microwave circuits, they become popular with circuit designers. The main objective of this project is to design and simulate a single element patch microstrip antenna of different shapes using Agilent’s Advanced Design System 2015 A design software\ momentum simulation. These are: rectangular, square, circular, circular ring and non-uniform polygon. The other specifications are displayed with each design. The ADS results give the return loss, radiation pattern, polarization, power, absolute fields calculated parameters and some other interesting outputs that can be analyzed. The theory of microstrip antenna is simply given in this report and the factors affecting the antenna design are explained. The design steps of below types of antenna are given and for the others antenna.

Null Synthesis and Implementation of Cylindrical Microstrip Patch Arrays

A C-band conformal aperture coupled microstrip patch phased array was modelled and fabricated. The measured results show the capability of the array to form a directive sector beam as well as an omnidirectional pattern within the measured bandwidth of 19%. As the gain variation is negligible while scanning the direction of the array, it is recommended for 360/spl deg/ cover in communication systems.
