National Capital Region (NCR, Delhi) in India is one of the fastest-growing metropolitan cities which is facing a severe water crisis due to increasing water demand. The over-extraction of groundwater, particularly from its unconsolidated alluvial deposits makes the region prone to subsidence. In this study, we investigated the effects of plummeting groundwater levels on land surface elevations in Delhi NCR using Sentinel-1 datasets acquired during the years 2014-2020. Our analysis reveals two distinct subsidence features in the study area with rates exceeding 11 cm/year in Kapashera-an urban village near IGI airport Delhi, and 3 cm/year in Faridabad throughout the study period. The subsidence in these two areas are accelerating and follows the depleting groundwater trend. The third region, Dwarka shows a shift from subsidence to uplift during the years which can be attributed to the strict government policies to regulate groundwater use and incentivizing rainwater harvesting. Further analysis using a classified risk map based on hazard risk and vulnerability approach highlights an approximate area of 100 square kilometers to be subjected to the highest risk level of ground movement, demanding urgent attention. The findings of this study are highly relevant for government agencies to formulate new policies against the over-exploitation of groundwater and to facilitate a sustainable and resilient groundwater management system in Delhi NCR.

Tracking hidden crisis in India’s capital from space: implications of unsustainable groundwater use

In Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam, though at present flooding is merely a recurring nuisance, there is increasing concern that a combination of impending climate change and rapid urbanization will significantly exacerbate the situation. Given the significant measures taken in HCMC to reduce groundwater extraction and sea-level rise (SLR) inundation since the most recent subsidence studies, we aim to update and contribute to the subsidence information of HCMC with continuous temporal coverage from 2017 to 2019. In this study, we use Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) with Copernicus Sentinel-1 data and open source tools to determine current subsidence rates within the urban center of HCMC. Additionally, the scalability of this method and use of freely accessible data allows for continuous updating and monitoring of this high-vulnerability region. The observed average subsidence rates were 3.3 mm per year with a maximum local subsidence of 5.3 cm per year. These results largely align with findings of previous studies and reflect similar spatial distributed subsidence patterns. Inundation risk awareness is enhanced by not only continued improved subsidence analysis, but also incorporating latest advancements in Digital Elevation Model (DEM) accuracy. This study compares local differences between traditionally used AW3D30 DEM with the CoastalDEM. Our findings indicate that although we identify lower than previously accepted elevations in the urban core, that stabilization of subsidence is observed in this same region.

Surface Subsidence in Urbanized Coastal Areas: PSI Methods Based on Sentinel-1 for Ho Chi Minh City

Serious land subsidence and ground fissure (GF) disasters have brought huge economic losses to the Su-Xi-Chang area (China) and threatened the safety of its residents. To better understand the development of these disasters, it is urgent to carry out long-term and large-scale deformation monitoring in this region. In this study, based on time-series interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) technology, ground deformation characteristics were obtained at different periods. Meanwhile, Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua in Three Dimensions (FLAC3D) was used to study the stress, seepage field, and displacement changes in the soil layers caused by pumping activities at the bedrock bulge. The results showed that three subsidence centers were located in Suzhou, Wuxi, and Changzhou from 2007 to 2010. The ground fissures in Guangming village had obvious differential settlements and intense activities. The land subsidence in the Su-Xi-Chang area was under control from 2018 to 2021, while there was a relative rebound in most areas. Combined with numerical simulation and geological data, we demonstrated that pumping activities would accelerate and intensify the land subsidence process, and differential subsidence was prone to occur at the buried hill, which in turn led to the formation of ground fissures. By comparing the characteristics of ground deformation in different periods, it was proven that banning groundwater exploitation is an effective measure for preventing and controlling such disasters.

Monitoring of Land Subsidence and Ground Fissure Activity within the Su-Xi-Chang Area Based on Time-Series InSAR

Behaviors of the pile foundation due to groundwater level rising were analyzed by a series two-dimensional finite element analyses with fully coupled flow-deformation analysis. The different numerical models of single bore pile depth and diameter in Bangkok subsoil were represented with the parametric study. The pile–soil movement due to groundwater levels rising between numerical simulation and a previous experiment of the centrifuge test as the same condition are in good agreement. With rising groundwater level, the reduction of pile capacity can be evidently performed by the increase of pile settlement relative to soil surface. Moreover, the development of the plastic point captured by the finite element analysis revealed the mechanism behind the reduction of pile capacity. In this study, the evaluation of pile stability due to groundwater level rising for preliminary guidelines to protect existing structures are proposed.

Numerical Modeling of Single Pile Behaviors Due to Groundwater Level Rising

The embodiment of the invention discloses an experimental system for a large-sized ground fracture physical model, relating to the technical field of experimental measurement based on geology. According to the experimental system, the research of a development and extension physical model of a ground fracture formed by compression of differential stratums at a buried hill part of a bed rock during the exploitation of underground water is realized by virtue of experimental simulation. According to the experimental system, a model box is prepared by cementing organic glass; a support frame system comprises a framework, a hard support and a jack, the framework is fixed on the outer surface of the model box, the hard support is of a metal framework structure covering and mounted on the outer surface of the model box, and the jack is used for regulating the levelness of the bottom of the model box; a water yield measuring meter and a water valve are mounted on each water inlet at each end; a water yield measuring meter and a water valve are mounted at each water outlet; and a substrate form control system comprises a monitoring instrument, and the monitoring instrument consists of distribution optical fibers, content gauges, displacement meters, pressure measuring pipes and temperature gauges which are arranged in each layer. The experimental system is applicable to the physical research of the ground fractures.

Experimental system for large-sized ground fracture physical model

Wuxi City is located in the Yangtze River Delta region, China and is underlain by a multi-layered aquifer system in porous Quaternary deposits. Groundwater extraction, mainly from the second confined aquifer, has led to severe regional land subsidence. The ground surface started to recover after the restriction and, ultimately, the banning of groundwater pumping. This paper reports the results of long-term surveys, groundwater piezometric head (GPH) measurements and the monitoring of ground surface deformation by levelling and borehole extensometers. The subsidence is attributed to the compression of both the aquifer and aquitards in the porous strata. The spatial characteristics of subsidence are related not only to the distribution of the GPH, but also to the thickness and compressibility of different strata, the distance from the pumped aquifer and the distribution of pumping. There was a temporal lag in subsidence relative to groundwater drawdown. The uplift is related to a period of recovery following the peak pumping period and groundwater recovery subsequent to the restriction and/or banning of groundwater pumping. The uplift was 40% of the previous maximum at the Qianzhou borehole extensometer station.
