The invention discloses a method and a system for extracting an image target area. In a process of performing target area extracting on the binary image of a to-be-extracted image, two variables of a process image and a result image are introduced in. If the binary image is not equal with the process image, extension is performed on the binary image; the matrix value of the binary image is changed; the result image is assigned; the communicating domains of the binary image matrix are marked by different numbers in the result matrix which corresponds with the result image; the communicating domains are expanded for forming a bounding rectangle according to the numbers; all points in the bonding rectangle are assigned to one; then whether the binary image after variation of the matrix value of the binary image is equal with the process image is determined; the processes are performed repeatedly until the binary image is equal with the process image; and the current result image is used as an extracted result image of the target area for outputting. Therefore, the method and the system realize automatic extraction on the target area in the image, thereby settling problems in prior art.
